I have all JD>the airation I can get from an air stone and two JD>powerheads (all open wide). Sounds good. Changing a small percentage of the water too should keep it from getting too "hard". (If thats a problem.) Hopefully the water you are adding is pretty near a pH of 7.0... Another stunt I used to use was adding a solution of water and baking soda. The trick is to add it slowly. I used an old IV bottle, the type of thing thats just perfect for adding a measured amount of solution over a long period of time. A great trick I read about a long time ago when things suddenly started going very bad for the fish - was adding Hydrogen Peroxide to a tank. A cupful of 3% H2O3 is very much like what an oxygen mask is to a human. It will instantly bring up oxygen levels in the water - and drive off excess CO2, at least for a short time. As a first aid treatment (while you look for whatever is the main problem) it seems to work wonders and should buy you a little time. BTW - the article said you could pour in a whole quart in a 100 gallon (US gallon at that!), tank without any possibility of harming anything. I used it a few times while trying to stabalize a discus tank - and I'm sure it probably saved most of the fish. JD>I had some dead JD>plant matter stuffed in a coner of the under gravel filter JD>(dead or inth eprocess of dying) That could very well be. Hagen used to publish at least one good book on "Water Chemistry"... (At least I think it was Hagen.) It's a subject that gets suprisingly involved. The book gave a very good overview of what takes place in a tank, including the nitrogen cycles involved. * SLMR 2.1a * Change is inevitable, except in vending machines. --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Juxtaposition BBS (1:167/133) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 229 AQUARIUMS Ref: D5Y00003 Date: 05/28/96 From: PETA CLARK Time: 07:11pm \/To: BO LAU (Read 3 times) Subj: My fish won't eat BL> Hi Bo BL> You have plants, snails, coral, shells, and two fishes in a 5 gallon tank? Anyway, I'm really not into argueing much over all of this - I'm not PHD in any of this. I've collected, kept tropicals(In quantitys) over half my life(that's my own PHD), and currently, they Don't die anymore. I will tell you all I know about keeping tropicals with hopes that they will live longer in your tank - After all these years, I can one look at a fish, and tell if he's "not comfortable" in your tank. Back to the "Vacuum" cleaning subject... When you're Undergravel "Rug" gets dirty and you "Vacuum" it here's what happens; Aerobic Bacteria forms on the first fraction (about 1/10) of the top part of your undergravel filter (thats where most of the Oxygen is). Need I tell you what happens when you "Vacuum clean" the gravel? Bacteria is, Bacteria! We can't make it or tell it what to do. just provide for it - it needs Dirt, waste, and in our case, the more oxygen, the better. --- PCBoard (R) v15.3/M 10 (05-20-96 15 * Origin: RaMeY CyBeR BBS*PUERTO RICO*809-890-1769 (1:367/65)
