I have plants, snails and coral and shells in the tank. I bought both fish at the same time roughly the same size and one has outstripped the other and is almost double. The little one has started not eating and has a long trail of white to clear string instead of usual faeces hanging out of him. I took him out of the tank thinking the big one was bullying him but he got really depressed and ended up with fin rot which I fixed so I put him back in the big tank and he was happy to be back with the big guy but still won't eat and still has the white string. I used to give them fish flakes but now I alternate with dried blood worms and sinking pellets. The only thing I can think of that was different was the snails had babies and maybe he ate one of them. I don't know. I can deal with skin disease but not this other stuff. The other guy is happy no problems just the little one so it has to be him. I know you all get technical with the ph but these are only goldfish not cichlids. The little one has sentimental value having saved him after he flew out of the tank and was on the floor for a few hours we managed to save him even though he was all crusty and shrivelled the only difference being one side of him turned white. This could have damaged him but was over 6 months ago and he has only had a problem for about a month or so. When I get my own house I'll be getting cichlids (they seem to be the easiest tropicals to grow and the best looking except for bumblebee gobies) so this message area helps alot. If anyone can help with the goldie it would be much appreciated. RB>Would anyone recommend this for long term marine fishkeeping? NO!!!! Thirty years ago, I might have said yes. Today, there are better ways of doing it. You could run an UG filter, but you would be doing gravel cleaning and water changes - neither of which follows my KISS (keep it simple, stupid) belief. Pick up a marine book by Moe or the best one lately is The Reef Aquarium, by Delbeek and Sprung and READ, READ, READ!! I just saw Julian Sprung on a visit to Florida last week, and saw first hand his tank set up at Two Little Fishies, his company. Talk about knocking your socks off! I'm new to this conference so bare with me if I ask something thats been asked before. I'm having serious problems with my Oscar . This is week # 4. The only symptoms that he had/has are fits [dashing about wildly and bashing himself against everything] , trouble swallowing, and total loss of appetite. Treatments so far have been: 1.) Parasite Guard 2.) mild salt bath [3 tsps. per gallon over 3 days] 3.) two Paragon treatments, 4.) two Aquazole treatments, 5.) one Maracyn II treatment. All according to package directions. The only live foods that I've given him were a few feeder fish from my own tanks (extra guppies and platies), 1 crawfish , and mostly earthworms from bait shops. He doesn't have fits anymore and he has healed up very nicely, but He still won't eat anything and its been 3 weeks since he totally stopped. have been adding Cravex to the 20 gal. hospital tank where I moved him for treatment. By the way all the other fish who shared the 55 gal. tank he was housed in before he got sick are fine. Any help would be appreciated. When I had to do that in the past, to clean an infested tank, I used about a pound of salt per 50 gal of tank, with the gravel still in it. Rubbing all tank surfaces, even the glass top, with salt paste. Then fill, rinse, fill, rinse until all traces of salt are gone. AF well, it depends on what kind of invert - I only know atlantics well -Good starter inverts are Banded coral shrimp, Condilactus. -Good for testing your tank: Flame Scallops and feather dusters. If you can keep the two latter, you have a good tank BL> That setup you were talking about with the hole drilled in the side >your tank and the 30 gallon "water treatment" tank sounds nice. But as I wa >planning it out I found that I don't really have the room to install one. Al >I kinda partial to my tanks and if I drill a hole into the side of one, then >that limits me as to how I position my tank. AF I know what you mean, That's another reason to use the side glass than the bottom one, Cost less, and is easier to replace - I did a Pet Shop over here one time, and I had the guy drill about 60-10 gal and 4-50 gal tanks 1/4 were salt and the rest were fresh(Works good for fresh too). They grouped in about 3 groups, each had a 55-gal tank on the floor for a filter 1/4 of the filter was crushed coral(on the salt) and the rest "Bio-Balls", the Crushed coral was under water but the bioballs weren't. For the Freshwater filters, I just used BioBalls, Part under water, and part above (so not to raise PH). Worked like a charm! (1:203/112) AF Sounds good to me - probably Crushed coral would be better ...it is more porous for better bacteria attachment - keep it dark too . tell me what happens. AF Freshwater:One of the thinks I noticed with the external filters was, plants grew better - I couldn't get them to do well on an undergravel But, when the filtering was done away from the main tank, they did well. AF Also, you could build something over the tank - I've seen that also. Example; take a 5 gal bucket with holes on the bottom and place it over the top of your tank - fill it with Bio-Balls or Plastic hair rollers (Or anything non-toxic to fish that looks rough for bacteria attachment), thin a powerhead with a hose attached to the outlet so as to bring water over the bucket ,and sprinkle down into the media, back into the tank. Presto! one Amonia Tower, Cheap! you could get fancy, have it hanging on the wall, with PVC pipes going in and out from the Bucket to the tank... It would work I'm planning a giant version (I have two- 1000 gallon systems ) It will use a 50-Gallon plastic drum. I'll be taking water BL>from the first 2 inches of the surface -> Sorry to but in here, but you'd be better off with a system similar -> to what you describe, but using algae and saltwater plants as the -> water treatment. Ihave seen a few systems like this, where they have -> a tank loaded with plants, and the tank recieves lots of sun. They -> pump the water from the main tank into the plant tank. -> It does work, as I have a 30 gal. plant tank, and all ammonia, -> nitrite, and nitrate are undetectable. I never hooked my display tank -> up to this, because it's too far away from the plant tank. you are right ... the best is an algae filter, no but's about it - the big and only drawback I had, was keeping it alive (The algaes) for a long period of time. A good healthy, algae-tank has cured sick fish for me in the past. BL's idea would work well also.
