I have a male Umbrella 'Too that was in a breeding program about a year or so ago. He and the hen were together for about three or more years and got along wonderfully. One day, they were doing their typical 'Too calls, and my ex hubbies daughter went down, started flipping the lights off and on rapidly, while screaming at them outside of their door. Directly after that, he went into complete terror mode, and killed the hen. My question is this. Lately, though Vet checked and updated on check-ups, he has been starting chest plucking and uncontrollable screaming all the time. Do you guys feel that he is wanting another mate or be back into the breeding program again? Now keep in mind that I got vry luck, for he was so gentle with his mate before. He would literally put his wing over her back when we went down there to clean and feed. They had their very own room, never before that, did we have the first problem with him being anything but sweet towards her. All of the Vet's test were normal, and he is in fine health. Should I try to find him a companion, or someone that has more experience with the breeding of 'Too's and get him a mate? He is a wonderful bird. He is rather larger than most Umbrellas, and he is a baby and a half to women. He hates most men, and loved Maggie to death. HELP! I just want the best for him. I do get him out all the time and love on him, but sometimes I think that this is not enough, since he was used to his mate. What do you guys think I should do? I have had him now for almost 8 years, and though it would kill me for a while to send him away, I just want the best for him, ya know? Thanks in advance for any kind of experience that you may be able to share with me. ... Your advice seems to go along with what I've been reading about feather-plucking being mostly a sign of bordom and a need to be chewing and destroying stuff...a natural need for most parrots, it seems! I think took, that perhaps more social attention could be paid to the bird. It could be that the poor thing simply needs his owner to play with him more out of the cage and let him "hang around" with the owner for a significant period of time every day. C ya! ... "Cat BBQ?
