If you are lucky enough and good enough to get your birds to breed right away (within a year) you still have to continue to feed, house and vet them. Then the babies have to be fed and go to the vet. Then, after the first clutch.....when are the next ones....6 months later, maybe. More like a year or more later. Don't get me wrong....it is a real rush to hold the first baby of your own breeding. Just don't expect it to be anything but a LABOR OF LOVE! I was extremely lucky with my first pair, CAGs. They were READY to breed when I got them. Acquired in October...eggs in May. Hen died in August. (Heart attack according to the necropsy.) Then we went thru 6 months of hell with the cock. He was so attached to that hen that he refused to eat. Ended up losing about 85 grams. Many vet visits and meds later he finally came out of him grief. He has a new girl now, but they haven't shown any interest in nesting, several years later. Other pairs are on again, off again. Some are fairly consistent. Added new pairs of Cherryheads and CAGs last spring....no babies at all last year...just 17 hungry mouthes to feed. Remember, its a labor of love....and a lot of fun!
