When I bought "Toto" six years ago I was told that the breed is not noted for talking, but that it might learn a few words as time passed. Well, time has passed and while Toto is a remarkably sociable little guy, and mimics many sounds, he does not have any interest in talking and doesn't seem to get off on the sound of his own voice (I had an African grey which burbled to itself and chattered for several hours every day). Is there anything that can be done to get a parrot to make the speech connection? As I said, Toto *does* mimic sounds -- like the swallowing sound I make in my throat when I drink a cup of coffee or a glass of water, occasionally he'll make sounds of laughter, or more personal sounds (he has been known to make a definite fart-like noise when he felt the occasion warranted it). I've tried everything short of a continuous loop tape. He gets off on television shows with violence, also gets very vocal when I play an opera. I beleive it happened somewhere in almost two years ago. the dealer didn't leave, they were killed, both the aunt and Moses along with others. Over four hundred Macaws died through that ordeal, but it didn't have to end up that way as the authorities took over ten days to go to the house after a complaint from the feed store , Howard Voren, the vet and others. ?THey did not have the wildlife permit, permits of any as the wild life could of gone right in after the first complaint. ANimal Control took the birds and sold them at auction for the big bucks. THis can happen to any of us if we don't have arrangements that meet the law. THe mother and relatives tried to get the birds but did not even after going to court. THE judge gavet he birds to the animal control for auction like a piece of furniture. I have two of these creature that survived, the two Hahns Macaws. I had four but found great homes for Tinkerbelle, Joan and Speedy (he was my baby) I have the two others and they'll stay with me till my death. All the others will come back to me if they ever need me. Thirteen of the Hahns survived, one that is with Tinkerbelle, is without a beak but the two of them are doing great together. (Finsch's Amazon [Amazona finschi]) If so this is my favorite Amazon of all and yours sounds a lot like mine. -> I've tried everything short of a continuous loop tape. He gets -> off on television shows with violence, also gets very vocal when I -> play an opera. We gave ours a transistor radio set to a "talk Radio" station, but he learned the theme music instead of any discernable words.... BUT, like yours he went APE over football games on TV and particularly band music! His cheery personality was so appealing though that we never missed any ability to talk. He could talk a streak in Spanish, and did say a few words in English occasionally, but like you said was mostly a mimicer. -> years ago I was told that the breed is not noted for talking, -> but that it might learn a few words as time passed. It's my personal opinion based on what I saw from my Lilac Crown, that they learn to talk (If they're going to) at a very early age. Ours was a very OLD parrot and had obviously learned a lot before he came to live with us. He learned few if any NEW words with us, but learned lots of new _sounds._ Tell me more about yours. I'm a great fan of the Finsch's parrot. ^..^ --- FidoPCB v1.5 beta-'j' * Origin: BOO! Thanks I just started reading this echo since I noticed it on the ELIST. However, I noticed you have the same problem that my dad has with our family pet. Our Macaw has the same habit of pulling her feathers out. Someone once told me it has something to do with lacking attention or whatever. My father did get some kind of spray from a pet store but I find that she pulls out her feathers less often when I play with her or when I help her out with her preening. Strange... Thanks I have two myself, and Sparky started doing this around December. I'd find all these feathers on the floor and in his cage. I kind of figure he's jealous of Mikey and he's venting his frustrations out on himself. But anyway, my sister suggested to lightly spray him with water or put a bowl out on the cage for him to go in himself. It helps almost 100%. I still think he's jealous, but it could be because the house might be to dry for him. Let me know how it works.
