Do you happen to know anything about that feature of Amazons? The LC never did it but then he was blind..... The YC could scare the heck out of you if he did that while you were in no position to defend yourself! He also attacked bugs fiercely! -> I wonder if they actually recognize themselves, or see the reflection -> as another bird? Self-recognition is supposed to be an indicator of -> intelligence. IMHO they're plenty smart, but I believe they're trying to impress the 'other bird' they see in the mirror. Our YC played by the hour at the mirror, but as he aged (and got cranky) he'd attack his image in the mirror viciously when it didn't respond to his liking. I din't call THAT real smart..... -> That sounds so idyllic, but I do fear for the bird. There's too many -> big and hungry things out there. I'm afraid to even take my birds -> out on the deck in their cages. I watch them constantly when they're -> out. She never leaves hers out unattended, but thinks nothing of walking outside with him sitting on her shoulder. He'll take off and soar around beutifully but I'm not sure if you could get back inside without him. He's wary that way. Oh! They have a pet pig too, and the conure just LOVES to torment that poor pig. You might be able to sneak inside while 'Pepper' pesters the pig. They lost a DYH two years ago because it ate some tuna salad that was on the coffee table. -> My grey thinks cats are wonderful. Aye! So did my "Cookyroo Bird" (Ringneck dove.) My AG like our dog. Started whistling and calling his name. He is about 4. I did not let him out as soon as I got in this afternoon and he got a bit nippy. He is pretty vocal. I have noticed he or she is a bit more timid about unfamiliar surroundings than most Amazons. He wants plenty of attention. Reminds me of the wifes ex-Cockatoo. I want out and open the door. I leave the television on for him during the day. He has a pretty good handle on the English language. I'm not sure about all Greys, but this one is the smartest parrot I have had. Including DYH, Nape and Mexican Red Head. I don't know much about Cockatoos, but 'specialize' in African Greys. I have 3 adults and one 6 week old chick that I am hand raising. All 4 preen ... tho the chick not as often (she just got feathers ~ last week!). From my observation a bored bird will preen more ... So will a healthy bird. A sick bird will look disheveled and won't seem to care. BB> Also, is he probably going to get a better sense of balance and stop BB> breaking tail and wing feathers as he gets older? Whenever new BB> feathers grow in that are longer than the ones he has, he breaks BB> them immediately! Ohh good one. When I got Zonker my pet African Grey, she could not perch reliably. Got her only weeks old -- barely weaned. I didn't expect such awkwardness! We would laugh when 'she' would fall and stagger. In fact, she picked up this laugh and now mimics it! This changed within the first year. As time moved on, she became more and more adept at climbing, hanging upside down by one foot. It's been a long time since I've seen her fall tho she has become 'stuck' in her hooded (side mounted) cage food dish. She panicked, squawked, freed herself and hasn't played in it since ... heh. Be thankful your bird is having fun (al beit breaking feathers). Much better than some of the older birds I've seen in the pet stores where they eat, sleep and just sit there. If you have any antics your feather breaking bird has ... please share 'em.
