Does any one know a place that i can get one at? You can get the best VALUE in a parrot by purchasing it directly from a breeder. The Sunday paper in a lot of areas includes ads from bird breeders in the classified section. A young, weaned, hand-fed baby bird purchased from a breeder is a wonderful pet. Hand-fed birds do not need to be tamed. They already regard humans as sources of food and comfort. There is some problem with people posing as breeders and offering smuggled baby birds for sale. You do not want a smuggled bird. It is illegal and might be carrying a disease. Refuse to buy any young parrot that does not have a solid, closed band on one leg. These bands can be put on the parrots only when they are a few days old, and are ALMOST a guarantee that the bird was hatched in captivity. You may also want to quiz the breeder about where they get their breeding stock, who their vet is, what tests they run on new birds, and how long they quarantine new birds before putting them in with the rest of their breeding stock. You will also see adult birds for sale in the classifieds, some at very cheap prices. However, as many others here will attest to, a free or almost free bird is rarely so. Many of these birds are ill and need extensive, expensive veterinary care to recover. Also, sometimes people want to get rid of their birds fast and cheap because the birds have very bad habits. The bird may be a problem biter, may hate people, or may otherwise not be a very good companion. I've bought birds that weren't hand-fed babies. The first time I bought a hand-fed, domestic bred baby parrot, the difference was so drastic I swore I would never buy anything else. --- MacWoof 1.5.3 * Origin: Point of Enlightenment (1:109/615.2@fidonet) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CGJ00001 Date: 12/13/95 From: TOM WEISS Time: 06:22pm \/To: KATHY JOHNSON (Read 6 times) Subj: Pelvic sexing On 12-0995, KATHY JOHNSON wrote to TOM WEISS: > JR> With some experience dealing with Lutinos, I have been told that > JR> one can press a finger in pelvic area of the bird and the female > JR> will have a larger space than the male. I sell hand fed cockatiels pretty quick -> compared to other birds. Please reply. Actually Daniel, I don't breed to sell, I breed to ensure the species and to achieve a healthier bird. I have seen many pet store birds and mine are at least twice the size. When I do manage to accumulate an excessive amount of birds, I usually let my friend adopt them for whatever I have invested in them. That sounds very impresive. Well, I like what you're doing. Selective breeding ensures positive traits in your line. Thats something that not everyone does. Well I wish I could see one of your birds in the future. I once had a pair of sinamos but the male died within two hours of mating with the female. I could not find another male so I ended up giving her back to the original breeder. I was thinking of obtaining a good pair of white faced, but at the time I had too much to handle. Now I have some Lady Gouldian Finches, Cuban Finches, and a pet Macaw. I hope to do good with producing big, healthy, and colorful Gouldians. Since I work in a pet shop, I'm able to hand pick wich birds look healthy to add to my selection. Its an expensive hobby, but once you're hooked, you're hooked. Well, got to go now. Just a comment here...using a wire wheel on poopy concrete is BOUND to make dropping dust. As we all should know, this is not a good thing to inhale. If somebody *does* use a wire wheel or grinder to clean dirty perches, be sure to either do it outdoors, or wear a high-quality face dust mask to prevent inhalation of dust particles. --Kathy * SLMR 2.1a * --- Silver Xpress Mail System * Origin: bloom county bbs * Parrots HQ * (313)582-0888 (1:2410/400) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CGM00005 Date: 12/13/95 From: SUE TURO Time: 07:39am \/To: KATHY JOHNSON (Read 5 times) Subj: Christmas -=> Quoting KATHY JOHNSON to ALL <=- Hello Kathy...;-) It has been a long time since I've talked to you...;-) Update here: During my regular yearly check up...I had to have a biopsy done...everything is fine...the tissue was benign...I've had a real hard time with my sinuses...since I had to close the apartment up for winter...seems that I was having trouble with my Lutino Female Princess....couldn't handle her dust....so the breeder took her back and gave me another grey 'teil...well, this one looks like a female...is approximately 8 months old...but talks up a storm....any suggestions???
