Also, how or rather where did these birds come from ? Are they like Senegal Parrots, where in Senegal one bird is tied to a piece of rope and pegged to the ground scraming for help, and when other birds come to investigate are caught in a net , thrown into a cage and then shipped to market. I think that there are a lot of questions to be answered here, morally and otherwise before someone can say that they should have the right to bring birds, whether its one or a hundred across the border. --- InterEcho 1.12 * Origin: The Mohave Desert BBS, Victoria BC, Canada (1:340/2) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CFE00013 Date: 11/09/95 From: ELVIS HARGROVE Time: 11:58am \/To: FRAN WARWICK (Read 4 times) Subj: Grey Cheek Parakeets -> EH> Auctions run to hundreds of birds at the local INS facility. -> Are you located near Mission, Texas? Yep. The MooreField facility is 12-15 miles from me. Haven't gotten out there recently though. I always wind up spending BUCK$$$ when I go. -> I heard thru the grapevine that the is a local person, near you, involved in -> smuggling charges. There's ALWAYS somebody involved in smuggling (and the associated charges) around here. It's a way of life among the indiginous species. -> They are really cleaning house in Texas. Well, they've always been pretty dilligent about parrot smuggling measures. Two people that I know (NOT well...) are presently "Guests of the Government" at El Paso. There's recently been a new wrinkle in the McCaw smuggling trade where folks buy a McCaw in Mexico. Visit and 'fly' it daily for a couple of weeks, then rendezvous with the supplier on the river south of Mission and FLY the bird across. The latest dodge has several grams of cocaine in a little "Backpack" to ease the pain of purchase..... ^..^ --- FidoPCB v1.5 beta-'j' * Origin: BOO! I'm really getting to wanting another Lilac Crown. We gave our Yellow Cheek to a little girl in town who just fell in love with him. (And he with her.) He'd not been fit to live with since my office manager left, (They spent all day together for months and had bonded strongly) so when she showed how well she could handle him we felt it would be cruel to keep him. (Heck, what's 600 bucks!) Anyhoo, we're completely birdless now, and a Lilac Crown would be just right for Poss. Maybe one that can SEE this time. ^..^ --- FidoPCB v1.5 beta-'j' * Origin: BOO! But what do you do, kill them ? Actually, they probably do. Quakers (monk parakeets) are illegal in a number of states, for example. In Wyoming, I have heard that they DO confiscate and euthanize any quakers they find. In Ohio, quakers MUST be clipped or pinioned. In Virginia, they must be banded. In New Jersey, they're totally illegal, but I think there's a grandfather clause since the law is fairly new. Quakers are also outlawed in California. I haven't heard of any states banning grey cheeks outright, however. --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: Bird Info Network (303-423-9775) (1:104/234) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CFE00016 Date: 10/23/95 From: CLAIRE CONNER Time: 08:25am \/To: TOM WEISS (Read 4 times) Subj: BREEDING QUESTION PAIRING TW>Question: Is a male like a drunken sailor when put with a lone female of th >same species? Hi Tom, No one can give you fact on this, but my OPINION is that maybe you should have not put the box up when you first set them up. In other words, if they are not spitting at each other or being otherwise hostile a little "companionship" time without the stress of a nest box may do wonders. In rare cases I have been able to get a pair to breed right away without them having some relaxing time first. You have only had them two years if my memory serves me right (maybe a little longer) and the box has been up the whole time. Take the box down for six weeks/2 months and then try again. In their own way greys do pair bond. With greys it isn't like you are losing a breeding year by taking that time off since they are not seasonal breeders (at least mine aren't). Worth a try, in my humble opinion. They were brought in (in the past) as handfeeding babies and the market was flooded with them every spring.
