The stats I have seen say to breed traits favorably to cross out by at least the F3 generation to unrelated stock. How do you think mutations occur, anyway? In the wild animals have no real regard for whether or not they are related. They haven't developed a clan system. I do however realize the importance of gene pools and studbooks for endangered animals. I live in Vero Beach, which Erin took the turn to come a land here at my front door. I had all my feathered kids, big kids to little kids to get out of here. I had to think of leaving them in the pet carriers for days as my home could not be here when I would return. What a mess! I had a baby Eclectus that hatched in the closet .....and please don't forget a small mobile generator as this was the saving grace of anything I had with me. I was able to make the formula, hatche my baby and save my fertile eggs, well, most of them as I have two female Eclectus with me now as a direct result of having that generator. the police let me back over here to get my eggs, they were the last for me to save on my list, as I still had some time to get them, very little time. No, I did not name the baby Erin. He doesn't have to get rowdy KJ> and "happy" KJ> to entertain himself (only to entertain YOU, which is KJ> probably not on KJ> his list of things to do yet ). Well, yeah, no arguement there. I meant playing as in playing. When we are home he does this GREAT statue immitation... Here lately he will climb one side of the cage and stare at whoever is sitting on the couch, with some occasional noises. KJ> You're rushing things a LOT. This bird was in a home for KJ> many years KJ> alone and ignored, and now you want him to suddenly be a KJ> loving trusting KJ> pet. It may take more years to UNDO what was done than it KJ> took KJ> originally to make him that way. Be PATIENT. Love him for KJ> the beautiful KJ> critter he is, adore him from afar and glom on the B&G baby KJ> when you KJ> want to handle a bird. Don't MAKE the greenwing do anything KJ> until he is KJ> ready, or you might make him become more aloof or even mean. No, we do not force him at all. We will open the door of the cage and offer an arm to come out. If he accepts he comes out onto his perch, if not he will slink back into the corner and we leave him. I have noticed when we put him back in he is turning back towards us more slowly, used to look like a red tornado trying to get back facing us on the perch. Last night was the first time they were out together, the GW on his perch on the side of his cage and the B&G on the top of his cage... The GW tried to snag the B&Gs tail one time when he turned and it came near him. He does watch the B&G play with some interest... I think he thinks Rowdy is nuts. (he has watched Audra do aerobics and does them with her, now he does aerobics on the top of his cage when he is out, very cute, that and he has watched us play with a puppy in the floor and thinks he should play the same way when in the floor... wants to play fight) Dunno if they will ever share the same cage but Buster seems to be calming down some. They do seem to chatter back and forth. KJ> Again, be patient. It'll take lots of time, love and KJ> patience before KJ> this bird will trust you. Birds are smart, and they remember KJ> things for KJ> a LONG time. This bird has NO REASON to love, trust or KJ> respect you. You I understand this. We talked to so many people who suggested another bird. KJ> are new to his life, and he's lived a long time under the KJ> "old rules". KJ> It's going to take some time for him to come out of the KJ> shell he's been KJ> in for 13 or so years. And anyway, from what I've seen, KJ> greenwings KJ> aren't known to be as rowdy as B&Gs--they are a bit more KJ> dignified and KJ> cerebral, and less physical in their play. Keep offering KJ> interesting KJ> toys and lots of good food in chunks he can hold and KJ> gnaw--sooner or KJ> later, he'll find something that appeals to him that might KJ> trigger a KJ> beginning of a mood change. But don't RUSH anything--the KJ> bird is NOT KJ> going to change into a tame pet overnight. I got him a Macaw chew toy. He played with it for a minute and dropped it. (likes to watch it bounce around the bottom of the cage) I hand it back to him and he will watch me with great interest for a minute, slide over, and install it carefully in his water bowl. (first time he dropped it he got splashed and did not like it) He has a great fear of cloth, apparently been covered and moved or covered and left. No cloth toys, makes him head to the far side of the cage and stay. Oh what a learning curve this is. KJ> Good luck and keep us posted on his progress! I appreciate the time and insight you have given me. --- FMail 0.94 * Origin: WANTED: Muzzle For Blue Crown Conure... (start) **************************************** Date: 03-18-95 From: PATTI JONES To: JAN THOMAS Subj: Re: parrot transport Conf: PARROTS ___------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jan, Well first off, you have to understand that I transported 7 parrots, <2 Macaws, 2 Amazons, 2 Congo African Greys, and 1 Grey Cheek Parakeet> along with their cages, and 4 dogs , 4 cats and 25 house plants. Months before the move, I would take all of the birds frequently in the car...couldn't do anything else, as I wasn't about to rent a truck to be able to get them used to the ride. I also started all of the birds on bottled water..fearing that the change of water would make them sick, and I could always get plenty of bottled water anywhere in the U.S.. I purchased plenty of extra food for all of the animals..just incase that the truck should break down. I also purchased a fan that plugs into the cigarette lighter, to be able to help circulate air into the back of the truck. I also rented a house where I would be moving, just so I wasn't "in transit" with all of the animals once I got there. Then I started checking on prices for a truck. I found that the Ryder trucks that have the door that opens into the cab of the truck was the ticket for me....that way you can block the door open and have access to the back for the animals. When I called to first check on the truck, I told them that I had severe allergies, and the truck couldn't be cleaned with ANY cleaning agents...would that be a problem? They stated that it wouldn't, and when I called to reserve the truck, to be sure and let them know. When I got the truck, I first measured the width of the truck for the ".fence" that I was going to put up to separate the dogs from the birds. Having gotten it measured, I cut pieces of wire to secure the fencing to the inside of the truck. Things were packed in above the cab, and blocked and tied down, so they wouldn't come loose. At the appointed time, mind you the sale of the house has closed, and the side of the Mtn 1/2 mile away is burning...ashes falling everywhere, so we had to work FAST.....the birds were put in first, and their cages were wired to the sides of the truck, leaving a center isle. Then across the back of the truck I put the dogs, and closed the back door. The trailer to tow my vehicle was quickly attached to the truck, and the car was pulled up on the trailer, and we were off, in about 25 minutes at the most . The cats were placed in the second vehicle, along with misc stuff. The plants were in the truck with the birds, I figured that the extra oxygen from the plants would help in such closed quarters. I think the only mistake that I made, was that I didn't take enough covers for the cages...the birds did fine without them, but after leaving 80 degree weather in L.A., we hit a snow storm in Kingman, AZ, and drove through snow all the way to Liberal,KS...so my bird babies were cold. We got here at 2 a.m., unhitched the trailer, and rolled the birds down the ramp into the house. I plugged in a night light that I had stashed for this very moment, then threw my sleeping bag down right next to the cages and fell asleep, that way if they got startled, then I would be right there for them. The driving arrangements were shared with a friend of mine, which allowed one of us to sleep while the other drove. We only stopped for food and gas, and never left the truck out of our sights. The trip turned out wonderful...the inside of the back of the truck had a homey resemblance, and everyone had plenty of room to get up and move around. WARNING : Do **NOT** close the door that opens into the cab of the truck....you will suffocate your animals !!!! I just got a flyer in the mail from a stained glass company, Sunshine Glassworks. They are advertising a sale on Hirsch brand lead-free solder in 1/2 pound spools for $4.75 (normally $10.19 per one pound spool). (sale price good thru November 25, 1995.) The order number is #31-LFH Call Sunshine Glassworks at 1-800-828-7159 Please note--for those who are used to electronics solder with a flux/rosin core, this stuff is quite different. It has no core, and thus requires externally applied liquid or cream flux to make it stick and solder properly. It will require extensive washing and cleaning to remove all of the flux residue after soldering. But it works GREAT to fix broken cage welds or build new cages safely. --Kathy * SLMR 2.1a * --- Silver Xpress Mail System * Origin: bloom county bbs * Parrots HQ * (313)582-0888 (1:2410/400) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CF200007 Date: 10/31/95 From: KATHY JOHNSON Time: 03:47pm \/To: ALL (Read 4 times) Subj: factoid I found this snippet used as space filler in the local paper-- "More than 57 million cats, 52 million dogs and 11 million birds are kept as pets in U.S. homes, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association."
