--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CDG00013 Date: 09/09/95 From: TOM WEISS Time: 06:36pm \/To: FRAN WARWICK (Read 2 times) Subj: Ag's Fran, I've been very busy this past week consulting on a new project at work -- looks like I'll be in Houston every other week for 8 weeks. Leave on Mondays, return on Fridays. Yech! Not that far from Austin, eh? Anyways, since work has been so hectic I've not checked the breeders much except to feed, water and clean. I've not noticed Rene much for a week now. Today being Saturday, I checked the nestbox ... one egg was off to her side, more might have been below her ... he growling at me like he always does (eggs or not.) So I closed the nestbox door and left quietly ... ran upstairs and woke up Sue (it was 5:30 AM) loudly! Gonna try the 'leave-em-alone-and-hope-method' this time. The check method did zip last two times. Course I really don't think checking was the problem then, since each egg was infertile, near as I could tell. Now I'm MARE trained enough to at least have my Avian vet help me disect the unhatched fresh(er) eggs ... if there are any this time. === * Freddie 1.2.5 * --- DB B2300sl/002493 * Origin: Wolverine (1:239/1004) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CDG00014 Date: 09/11/95 From: DOMINIC MCCAY Time: 12:54pm \/To: JIMMY GRAY (Read 2 times) Subj: boxing > Not gonna happen. I believe lab coats and showers before handling is a bit extreme. Can you imagine the bacteria and viruses that are rampent in nature?! Thourough hand washing will always be the best defense against transmission of disease. As nursing provides a human baby with natural immunity, the mother bird passes similar goodies to her babies. Perhaps hand feeding from day one and artificial egg incubation deprives babies from this natural source of immunity. I think mother birds should feed the babies for about two or three weeks before removal for hand- feeding. My Blue-fronted Amazon has tested positive for Giardia. We learned this, at the vet, right after we purchased her. The vet cautioned us about keeping her and told us the effectiveness of treatment was less than 40%. His advise was to return the bird to the pet store. By this time, I had bonded to Rita, so we kept her. One year has passed and she's doing fine. The Giardia may recur, so I take it one day at a time. Recently, Milwaukee water was found to carry this organism. Obviously, Rita picked up the disease in this manner. Would her immunity have been stronger if she hadn't been hand-fed from day one? It seems the more we mess with nature, the more problems we invite. ... UnZip... Expand... Explode... Life is still crazy here, wanna borrow an 81 year old for about >a month ? Nope, spent the weekend chasing my own 80 year old...Dad had a table for his jewelry at the Wyandotte Heritage days festival, and needed someone to give him lunch, dinner and potty breaks. Guess who got volunteered? So I spent 3 days running back and forth to and from the fair. But I took Kirsche down with me to entertain the crowds at the booth (and to entertain ME when it was slow ). I had TONS of people asking about her, and there were several people who might want one of the current clutch of babies. One guy even took a bunch of pictures of her. She was a charmer all afternoon--talked to little kids, gave me kisses and did her trick routine on command, and even danced a bit when the fife and drum corps went by! (It was *quite* interesting to see a conure "boogie" to a marching band drum rhythm!). OH! I'm getting some pure Precor to put down in the house. I'm using Ovitrol on the furniture and the only rug in the meantime. We haven't seen any fleas since that one day 2 weeks ago--I'm pretty sure now that he just brought a few strays home from the state fair greyhound adoption table. But I don't like fleas at all, and I certainly don't want to let them get a feethold in here . I figure the Precor will also help with the on-again-off-again seed moth problem, as it affects growth of ALL types of larval insects. And the Precor won't hurt ANYTHING but the bugs. Unfortunately, Precor washes off in the rain, so I can't use it outdoors. >I would also strongly suggest you start Tesla on Program to help >further protect from reinfestation (is that a word?) anyway ..i Nah. I don't like the idea of feeding the dog chemicals like that, even though everybody says they're safe. I'd rather go after the bugs themselves directly. Right now, I'm actually more upset over the seed moths and the fruit flies!!! (We got a bag of apples that were internally infested with fruit flies--they multiplied overnight and they're EVERYWHERE!!!) But the light-up flea trap is catching the flies, so that's a plus. Rico's bride-to-be arrived at my dad's for quarantine last Thursday. She's a gorgeous Jenday conure, with some unusual markings. She's "pearled" like a pearl cockatiel--most of her back and shoulder feathers are tipped in bright yellow (normal Jendays are all green on the back). Since Rico and several of his siblings have these yellow markings also, we are hoping that when the two of them are old enough, they'll produce "pearled" Jenday babies. This deal has been in the works since Rico and his sibling Niko were hatched--Niko went to live at Adairs, and in return, Adair has been waiting for a pearly female to hatch from her unrelated pair so she could trade. "Spot" (as she's been called by Adair), will be quarantined at my dad's house. She's been tested for EVERYTHING, and for several things more than once, and all her test results have come back normal and healthy. I haven't decided if she'll have to go a full 60 days in quarantine yet--due to my job, and my dad's hyperactive dog, this off-site quarantine is VERY inconvenient for all of us this time. She's the last bird to be allowed in here from another facility--my house is a permanently closed aviary after this. Our only problem is, Spot needs a new name. She's a cuddly, lovable GORGEOUS bird, and "Spot" just doesn't fit. I'd run a "name that bird" contest, but I haven't got anything to offer as a good prize. But any elegant name suggestions would be appreciated and considered! --Kathy * SLMR 2.1a * --- Silver Xpress Mail System * Origin: bloom county bbs * Parrots HQ * (313)582-0888 (1:2410/400) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CDI00003 Date: 09/13/95 From: DAVID EMANUEL Time: 10:41am \/To: KATHY JOHNSON (Read 2 times) Subj: Biting KJ> Oh, she doesn't bite at all!
