Dr. Branson Ritchie is THE vet in the US who is doing research into Polyoma virus, Psittacine Beak & Feather disease (PFBD), and Proventricular Dilitation Syndrome (PDS). He works with a team of equally talented researchers out of the University of Georgia. He spends a lot of his time trying to raise funds to continue his research--he talks at seminars, bird clubs and colleges, and writes articles for magazines occasionally, when his research turns up something of interest to the avicultural community. He also runs a 1-900 number for consultations and questions; some of the money from this helps fund the research. I'll post that info in a following message. What else do you want to know about him? --Kathy * SLMR 2.1a * --- Silver Xpress Mail System * Origin: bloom county bbs * Parrots HQ * (313)582-0888 (1:2410/400) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CD300026 Date: 08/30/95 From: KATHY JOHNSON Time: 07:32pm \/To: ALL (Read 2 times) Subj: Dr Ritchie 1-900 number (This info will be posted monthly by the moderator to inform new echo users, and remind the regular users, of this valuable service). TO ALL: The following text is a letter released by Dr. Branson Ritchie, DVM. Dr. Ritchie is one of the leading avian veterinarians in the US, and is heavily involved in research concerning Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PFBD) and Polyoma virus. Dr. Ritchie is making himself available to speak to bird owners of all levels of experience. The phone number is 1-900-AVV-IANS, or 1-900-288-4267. The phone is answered by Dr. Ritchie himself, from 7pm to 10pm EST at a charge of $2.95 a minute. For the cost of a visit to a local vet, you can speak to one of the foremost avian vets in the country. I strongly urge you all to save this post and keep it in a safe place for use in an emergency. And now, Dr. Ritchie's letter: *********************************************************************** For years I have observed the difficulties encountered by concerned bird enthusiasts and breeders who were seeking information about the care of their birds. In some instances, the inability to find answers to critical questions has resulted in undue pain and suffering on the part of their avian friends; in other cases, incorrect information has resulted in the mismanagement of disease outbreaks within a nursery, aviary or multi-bird household. I often asked people who have had these problems why they did not seek help earlier. Inevitably, they answer that they knew of no one they could call, they knew I was busy and did not want to bother me or they were afraid to ask what may be perceived by others as a trivial question. To help resolve this problem, I decided to provide the avicultural community with a nighttime phone consultation service. This service should eliminate the concern that bird enthusiasts have in calling upon me as an information resource. It will also provide a place for bird enthusiasts to have their questions answered and will help generate funds for research. Specifically, 1-900-AVV-IANS (1-900-288-4267) is designed to: Answer: *general questions about the care and breeding of birds *questions that bird enthusiasts may have after they have been to an avian veterinarian Provide an easy to access source of information: *to bird enthusiasts who are seeking a second opinion on some advice they may have received *to the latest research findings on the management of infectious diseases *to bird enthusiasts who are seeking preventative health advice for their birds Help people: *locate an avian veterinarian in their area who can provide medical care for the type of problem that their bird is experiencing *know when an abnormality they have noticed is severe enough to seek veterinary assistance *who have not previously been to an avian veterinarian understand what to expect *decipher complicated laboratory results they may have received on their birds and determine what these results mean to them and their birds *reduce the anxiety associated with the loss of a bird or an infectious disease outbreak I hope this service will improve the quality of care available to companion birds. As for plumheads--most of the diet and care info that applies to any of the ringneck parakeet species will also apply to plumheads. They are close cousins of the Indian & African ringnecks. A friend here has a non-producing pair. They like fruit, especially dried figs (they'll croon and purr as they eat the figs--it's a neat noise to hear!). They like to be able to fly, and from what I've been told, they like a deep nestbox (grandfather clock style). > local breeding aviary) I intend to make a larger cage, about 2 x 3 > x 3 ft., and s-l-o-w-l-y start supplementing their seed diet with > fruit, bugs, bread and milk, and perhaps veggies- see what they > like. (These suggestions from Low's book). I'd skip the milk, unless you make bird bread and mix the milk into the batter. Milk spoils fast in a cage, and some birds don't digest it well. It's better to bake it into something rather than serve it straight. >By the way, this is one of the most information-dense echos I have >had the pleasure of tapping. Thank you! Very nice. I've had Green napes, Reds, Violet necked, and Blacks along with the Blue Streaks.. I also like the little guys like gouldies > and perfects. I feed mine the Pretty Bird Lory diet Yes, they are neat.. but I didn't get into the nectar thing.. so we only have the one pair of Blue Streaks now.. I sold the breeder pair.. Mine are on Avico's dry diet and I also give them a bowl of dry stuff twice a week.. it has cat chow, chow mein noodles, egg noodles, some type of cereal like puffed rice or so, kibbles variety mix dog food, and a bit of reg. parrot seed. They really enjoy eating it, more so than their powder!! > and they do fine. They are also outdoors and that > contributes less to the mess. And that's the best way!! :) Wish we could do that here.. but since not, I just spray the cage down and wash it.. and sometimes chase them out of the cage and soak it in the tub with bleach.. we even had the breeders used to going into a carrier when we held it to the door and told them to get in.. made cage cleaning easy and for the most part we could clip their nails when they stuck them through the carrier holes.. grin.. less stress to them and us that way!!
