How did you and your birds manage during the storm? I aw KJ> KJ>>I took my birds to the mainland when Isaw it was comming in on land KJ>>here at my front yard. I am one block from the ocean so I mean KJ>>it came here on my steps. Most everything is okay....my babies KJ>>hatched in a closet wiht all the breeders, Rambo and myself. KJ> KJ>You moved them ALL? How? I can't imagine ever having to evacuate here KJ>that quickly. That's neat about the babies that hatched during the KJ>storm--I read about your generator. Good move there, and just in time! IT wasn't easy.....I have a carrier for each pair of birds. The large Hyacinthines, Greenwings babies, Moluccans all go into the weaning cages. All the others go into the pet carriers. I carry two additional carriers for the extras when I have to clean out everyone carriers. Not easy, but this is one of those times the stink is better then the skunk. The stink will go away with time. THEy trust me with everything in them, my feahter kids...they kno w when something is happening that I am here for them. they make it very eaasy for me to fetch them up. Everything that lives went with me. I rented a bedroom, kitchen and bath for all of us. I have my priorities of who goes first. When the manditory evacuattion happens that means nomore trips over the bridge. I had all my feather kids out with my dog, Rambo but not my eggs. I went back over the bridge with a heart pounding and a policewomen to my house for the eggs, two of them hatching and a brooder, incubator and hathcer combine. All eggs went into it. I lost two fertile eggs of 5 and 6 days fertility. I got two eggs layed from the blue and golds and my electus. both doing great...the electus layed another fertile egg three days later here back at home as if nothing happened. I will have a baby from that egg too....I went back and forth five times to carry enough food, water in bottles, pihne shavigs, you name it for a week. Because of the work and needless stress on my birds, I am moving them to the acreage within the next three months. If a Hurrincane comes they are 10 miles out of range fromt he ocean. We were not safe where I was either..but the only place I could get eventhough it still was within five blocks from the river. No good I must make a safe place for the kids Cherane, CAS --- KingQWK 1.05 Heavenly Aviary 497-234-4486 * Militaries *Red Fronted Macaws --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: Bird Info Network (303-423-9775) (1:104/234) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CCP00008 Date: 08/16/95 From: CHERANE TRAJERE Time: 07:25pm \/To: KATHY JOHNSON (Read 2 times) Subj: DR. RITCHIE 900 NUMBER KJ>KJ>this disease. I plan to speak to Dr. Ritchie about this as soon as I an KJ>KJ>contact him by phone, KJ> KJ>>Each time you call Dr. Ritchie...do you call the 900 number? or KJ>>at the university? KJ> KJ>I know you don't agree with me, but I use either number, depending on KJ>why I'm calling. If it's a "business call" (ie., getting info about his I do agree with you if it is medical as above you stated you would call him as soon as you can by phone for your business. If it is to donate time, energy to his cause.....then the university. I am in complete agreement with you. KJ>him in our bird club) I will call the University during the day. If it's KJ>a medical call, I call the 1-900 number. \ KJ>KJ>Those of you who breed birds, would YOU sell a bird into this home? KJ> KJ>>No, I would like to see and know how behaviours, husbandry with KJ>>practices or education on the part of the buyer. KJ> KJ>She seems pretty knowledgeable, compared to many who've called me about KJ>my babies, and she is quite a caring person. I haven't been to her home, KJ>so I can't say how her cleanliness, etc., is. One of the reasons I stated how she is with birds pertaining to husbandry....(note I didnot say cleanliness) is many times I believe the necropsy comes back this virus when in fact, it is the skills of husbandry that needs looking at....simple questions on your part could assist with giving you information. You could use you CAS book for a reference with a minni test for her over the phone with out her knowing. Just a matter of a conversation. You'll know all about her and her skills with birds. KJ>>The idea situation is to order the "virus" book or CD from KJ>>Winglers Publishing and delay all sells till studied. KJ>How much info will be in that book about PDS? It's still considered KJ>pretty much undiscovered country, research-wise. He still can't even say KJ>for certain that it IS a virus, even though he thinks it is. You can get information as how long it has been a problem at Aviaries. When and what has helped with the control of it or at least the ideas from different vets pertaining to what has been found to better keep healthy birds. Example: I read you never put a bird with a bird that has been exposed to the virus. Didn't you say she had a bird that was with the dying bird? In other words, I could go on but this stuff was writen by a vet for the AAV and I feel better if you did some good research before you sell you baby to this person as you may make a good choice or at least be prepared if something does happen. Cherane, CAS Just took this time as the opportunity to encourage all to use the hot line instead of the university. I have had bird, dog, cat, chicken, and human blood on me at various times in my life, and I alwasy have a sray bottle of peroxide to take care of it. If you poured straight bleach on it, I won't be surprised if after a couple of washes, you also have a hole when the bleach went.
