This is th -> first signs of a real dominance attempt. Don't let him get away with Oh, no problem there...he doesn't get away with much around here. I definately am in control. When I get really stern with him for something serious as trying to bite, he takes what looks like to me a submissive posture. As soon as I am stern and reprimand him, he immediately bows his head and grabs his chin and doesn't move. Whether it is a submissive posture or a simple "I'm sorry", there is no denying that I am in control. And btw, his aggressiveness that I was explaining is not as bad today as it was a couple of weeks ago. He is very excitable when he is first let out of his cage...so he gets alone time on his perch at this time with me not even making eye contact with him. He tries to destroy everything hanging on his perch, but calms down in about 5 or 10 min. If he doesn't calm down within that time period, I will immediately let him take his bath at this point, rather than later on. This always calms him down. This excitability is new (last two weeks) he has never acted like this before. I am attributing it to this "sexual madness"..... One of the other questions that I had is this...I take Phoenix out in my backyard with me. (in his cage) Naturally he is given fruits and treats etc. during the time we are out. I've noticed on more than one occassion Phoenix doing battle with a yellow-jacket. A couple of times he almost caught one by biting at it as it flew by him. What would happen if he caught one in his mouth or if one stung him? (other than say "ouch"...I figured I'd throw that in before I received some wise-guy answers ) I've never heard anyone talking about this or read anything about insect bites and how it affects them. I hope you don't think I'm off the wall...I was just wondering if its something that I should be concerned about. Do you have a recipe that you HN>could share with us? Birds and babies all over the western world are eating this bread! Modest, aren't I? 2 boxes Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix 2 cups of baby cereal (Heinz) 3 tablespoons baking powder 2 eggs and shells (whiz in blender) 4 jars baby food (carrots/sweet potatoes/mixed veggies, a fruit, turkey/chicken & rice/veggies/noodles) almost any of the baby foods can be used but choose those with a higher Vit. A content. 3/4 cup peanut butter 1 & 1/2 cups chopped/shredded fresh veggies (usually broccoli or carrots) 1 teaspoon Spirulina (Wheatgrass should not be used in baking) Mix wet and dry ingredients separately. Combine wet & dry ingredients along with chopped/shredded veggies. Dough will be stiff. Spray 9x13 inch pan with Pam and bake about 30 minutes (check for doneness) in a 400 degree pre-heated oven. Cool slightly, cut into squares, cool and freeze if too much to use in 3 days. You can add most anything - chopped nuts, toasted soybean bits (available at health food stores), shredded low fat cheese, chopped dates or figs, dried cranberries or blueberries, shelled toasted sunflower kernels, pureed bananas, peeled pureed fresh mango, papaya or kiwi (reduce number of jars of baby foods when using bananas or tropical fruits). HM>I sure wish I could find more information on this fascinating people HM>owner . You and me both, Hap! I am very fortunate in that I see lots and lots of baby AGs and probably have a good handle on what they are about. They are without a doubt the most fascinating bird I have ever been owned by. It is soooo difficult to let the baby AGs go but I can't keep them all. I rejoice that I can place them in special permanent homes with new owners who will have a well behaved, well adjusted lifetime companion. I don't sell my babies, they sell themselves. HM> I keeep a special eye out for your posts because they seem to have HM>lots of "grey matter" in them . HN>I will scrape cuttlebone over fresh fruit and cheese and "treats" for HN>Jonesy, is this good or not? Cuttlebone and Neocalglucon are very both safe supplements. Since you take Jonesy to the vet twice a year, you may not even need to do this. Do you have the blood calcium level run with each visit? The normal range for blood calcium is 8 to 12. If Jonesy's blood calcium is within this range, the calcium in the pellets should be sufficient without supplementing. As a general rule, birds who are on pellets shouldn't need additional supplements except for Wheatgrass on the soft foods daily. Of course, birds with low calcium levels do need a calcium supplement as directed by a avian vet. Is Jonesy on pellets? Let me know how Jonesy likes the bread. --- WinQwk 2.0 a#0 Unregistered Evaluation Copy --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: Bird Info Network (303-423-9775) (1:104/234) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CCB00015 Date: 08/03/95 From: BOBBI BRINKER Time: 11:43pm \/To: GEORGE DESTAFFAN (Read 3 times) Subj: NEST BOX GD>The box is the egg-stealer one. I think you mentioned something where it GD>let's the eggs roll to the center of the box then falls to a padded area GD>below the box. It'so hard to explain without my hands! The extension is at the side of the box nearest the room. It is an extension as wide as the box and deep enough (4 inches) that the egg is inaccessible to the bird. The bottom of the box needs to be slanted so that the egg will roll out into the extension. The extension has an opening the width of the box and high enough that the egg can roll out. The part of the extension that is nearest the room needs to be padded so the egg doesn't bounce against the wood. Naturally nesting material will have to be removed from the box. GD>One other question. What size are your cages and nest boxes The Umbrellas are in a suspended cage 4 feet high, 4 feet deep and 6 feet wide. The box is 16 inches square and 24 inches deep. My pair is not agressive at all so I have a one-hole nestbox. I think prices on most breeder birds can only increase given the import ban. Since AGs are not especially picky about their mate, your best bet may be to buy "failed" pets. "Failed" pets can make very good breeders because they are accustomed to the human presence and settle down quicker than imported breeder birds. The fact that you may be saving the bird from a lonesome life in a poor home is an added plus. My most productive pair of AGs consists of a hen from cage "A" and a male from cage "B".
