I ENJOY READING OTHER PEOPLES EXPERIENCES AND ADVICE. Hi, Daniel, and welcome to Parrots. I'm the moderator. Before I go any further, I'd like to make a request. Could you please turn off your "caps lock" key? Writing in all caps is equivalent to yelling in bbs etiquette, and it's also kinda hard on the eyes. Thanks! Now, back to birds! >MY PAIR OF NANDAYS HAVE HAD 2 CLUTCHES, ONE OF 4, AND NOW THREE MORE >CHICKS. AND MY PAIR OF SUNS HAD TWO CHICKS. I'M PRESENTLY HAND FEDDING >THEM EXACT. Another conure person! That's great! I've had some success with using Exact for my conures. I've also used Pretty Bird. Both formulas have given good weight gains and good feathering. >LAST WEEK I BOUGHT WITH THE HELP OF A FRIEND A PAIR OF AFRICAN GREY >CONGOS. THEY'RE SURELY ADULS, AND THE BARELY LEAVE THE NEST. This could be because they're shy and uncertain about their new environment. Were they domestically raised, or are they wild-caughts? >I'M FEDDING THEM VITA SEED FROM SUNSHINE BIRD SUPPLY AND EVERY TWO TO >THREE DAYS I SPRINKLE A BIT OF NEKTON CALCIUM POWDER. Do you give them fresh foods as well? Things like rice and beans, chopped veggies and fruits, pasta, cooked meats, yogurt; all these are very good for birds. Feeding them *just* seed isn't a fully nutritious diet; they require a wider variety of foods. The calcium is a good idea though; many greys tend to have low calcium levels. >I HAVE A WHITE SHEET OVER THEIR CAGE SINCE I NOTICED THAT THEY'RE VERY >SHY. The sheet DOES come off during the day, right? Just checking--I've heard of people keeping new birds constantly covered before. This doesn't allow the birds to acclimate, as they can't see what's around them. >IF ANYONE HAS ANY ADVIVE OF THINGS THAT I SHOULD OR SHOULN'T DO PLEASE >FEEL FREE TO LET ME KNOW. I'VE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT BIRDS BUT I KNOW >THERE'S A LOT MORE THAT TAKES BOTH TIME, AND EXPERIENCE TO LEARN. I'm sure the other "grey people" out here will jump in and comment too. Since I don't have greys, I can only offer general suggestions. I'm sure the grey breeders will have lots to say! I like your attitude; there are people who never realize that they won't ever know everything. Those are the ones whose birds will suffer in the long run. >THANKS FOR READING THIS FAR, AND AGAIN, I VERY MUCH ENJOY THIS ECHO. Thanks, I'm glad to hear that! By magazines, by telephone, letters and monthly meetings of parrot breeder groups. But not via electronical mails like Fido, because there is still not enough hardware in the households. Germany e.g. is 10 years behind the States. Wild African Greys are extremely difficult to breed because usually they are nervous birds. Give them silence around, do not disturb, let them alone. My source is Howard Voren. I just bought a Blue Front from him. I would love more details on the following subs. Which two subs dont you know and can you give me details on the subs you do know? According to him there are 5 subs: 1. Intermediate- a mix of subspecies. If the parents are different subs but both parents are Yellow Napes then the resulting babies cannot really be considered hybrids so Howard Voren decided to call this mix of subs-Intermediates. 2. Caribe- pardon my spelling. 3. Hondurans 4. Auropaliata-Photo on cover of BirdBreeder mag, June 1995 issue. photo taken by Howard Voren. 5. Parvipes-smallest? This is all the info that I have managed to get out of Howard Voren. During the course of my conversation with him, we hit many topics. Talking to him was like being able to see for the first time. He said that he would eventually get around to doing an article on the subs of YN Amazons. Never did finish the conversation with him. I intend to call or write to him to get more details as soon as my baby handfeeding days are done and my phone bill recovers. My spelling is very poor and the subs are spelled phonetically(fanatically?). My first bird is a YN that I bought at the age of 6 mos in 1978. I still have her. She is the cause of my resulting birdie fever. I also have one pair of Yellow Napes(mature), one pair of m/f Blue Fronted Amazon babies (10weeks old & 5 mos old), budgies, cockatiels & Gouldian finches. A little bit of everything. I have been learning on the small birds in hopes of graduating to one or two pairs of amazons. Figured if I mess up on a parakeet, it wont be as tough as messing up on a big bird. Congrats on your mealy, I have not even got that far with my mature pair of YN's, Pokey & Oliver. She looks very preggers, lots of bad attitude on her part, and lots of wood splinters floating in the water dish. Getting very tricky feeding them. --- * OLX 2.1 TD * O-OH-H, give me a home where the Amazons roam... --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: Utopia Tech (sm)-516/579-7507 DS/V34+/HST - 7.7gig (1:2619/101.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CBZ00011 Date: 07/27/95 From: MARION HANSEN Time: 01:09am \/To: FRAN WARWICK (Read 3 times) Subj: ringnecks Thanks for the info. A fellow breeder has a proven blue female that he needs a male for. He had recently been considering selling her since finding a mate was so tough. I told him that if finding a male was that tough then he should definately keep her and continue looking! He did not seem receptive to this idea. I rarely post. The male blue ringneck is for a fellow breeder. He is having such a tough time finding a mate for his female, he was thinking of selling her. I will have to check and see if he still has her. I assume he wants a blue male and not a split. I am not familiar with the Dog House Echo. I get this parrots echo thru Utopia Tech and there are so-o-o many to pick from! New York States allows the sale of captive raised birds marked with a seamless leg band placed on the bird at birth. Any birds not close banded need a proof of possession statement and a permit by the DEC. I only buy close banded birds regardless of whether or not it is exempt. It saves alot of questions and helps me keep track. In New York State, the following birds are exempt and may be sold at anytime without regulation: Canary and all varieties, Budgerigars, Cockatiels and all mutations, Zebra finch, Bengalese(society)finch, Diamond Doves, Java sparrow, Blue masked lovebird, crimson rosella, eastern rosella, Pale-headed(blue)rosella, Red rumped parrot and all mutations, Bourke's parrot. With laws getting tougher, I only buy close banded birds even if they are exempt. I have an interesting story about me, my local paper, and close banded birds, but will save it for another time. I would like to hear about the laws in other states regarding breeding, selling or keeping exotic birds. --- * OLX 2.1 TD * Press any key to continue or any other key to quit --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: Utopia Tech (sm)-516/579-7507 DS/V34+/HST - 7.7gig (1:2619/101.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CBZ00013 Date: 07/28/95 From: MARION HANSEN Time: 01:20am \/To: KATHY JOHNSON (Read 3 times) Subj: WHAT CAN YOU DO?
