It was Thanksgiving Day. I had just heard him on Paul Harvey news and ran downstairs to tell my husband. Of course I was very excited. I went back to the kitchen and started stuffing the turkey. Now my husband always is teasing me about the birds. He called up, "Pepper is on tv." thinking he was teasing I answered, "Oh sure." He called back, "Hurry Pepper is on tv." "Yaaaaaa," I answered. "No really." So I decided to humor him and caught a flash of green on the tv screen as they went to the next story. It is too bad about the birds performing that you saw. I think what most people like most about my birds performance is the joy they show in performing. Some of the tricks they enjoy so much they become all excited when they see the prop. The birds always get a food reward (a half to a third of a sunflower seed.) I feel they work hard for their performance and deserve pay. They take their work very seriously. They are anxious for the show to begin and I never let people hold them or come near them before a performance. When the show ends, they relax and enjoy having people talk to them and admire them. Some birds love to cuddle, Amazons love to eat. A reward should be something they enjoy. Amazons, however, gain weight very easily. When they perform, the food reward must be tiny so the bird does not take up a lot of time eating or their is too much time spent watching the bird eat and not seeing him perform. They need a small treat to help keep their weight under control. I take a small jar of shelled sunflower seeds. After a trick is performed, I break this seed into halves or thirds and give the piece to the bird. This might be too small for a parrot the size of a macaw or cockatoo, but it is perfect for an Amazon. --- InterEcho 1.08 * Origin: AK Pirate Society, Anchorage, AK (907) 563-9364 (1:3550/558) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 225 PARROTS Ref: CBU00028 Date: 07/25/95 From: JOANIE DOSS Time: 12:24am \/To: DIANE WINER (Read 4 times) Subj: The Amazing Amazons Can you believe I have had 10 Amazons and only one of them was a female. My birds were all wild captures except one. The performing group consists of two Napes and two Blue Fronts. They put on a 45 minute performance. They have had as many as 250 people hold them after a performance. We do many preschools and nursery schools and that means our audience is often 2 year olds. The birds have never bit anyone from the audience. The birds range in intelligence from quite smart to below average in intelligence. TJ, is the least intelligent of the group, but performs some rather difficult tricks because he tries so hard to please me. The smarter ones can be difficult to train sometimes. I agree with you that birds are very special. I am certain that Meggie is as smart as my boys, if not smarter. My guys just are out in the public more. There were so many eggs thats how I knew it was They are just like Zebra finches in that respect. They will start adding material, sometimes, before the chicks are out. I always limited the amount of branches that I put in. If it was needed, I added more. At one point, I had three pair of lovebirds build a wonderful nest on the shelf behind the nest boxes. It was about three feet long and about a foot high. When I wanted to check the next site all I had to do was pull out a nextbox. The nest was so tightly woven that it was not disturbed. I am very Interasted in buying one of your Milligold Macaws. But I have a few Questions. How old are they? Are they fairly tame birds? Were they handfed or wild caught or did the parents raise them in captivaty? Or they big as a B&G are a military? If I buy one I would like the biggest healthiest youngest & tamiest one you have. I alredy have a red lord amozon and I have fed 2 lovbirds & a parakeet. Oh and another question if I got a Milligold would it be weaned or hand feeding? I would want a weaned one but just weaned if possible. But again fairly tame. I looked in the phonebook at the area codes and found out you live in or near Jacksonville Fl. I live in Chesapeake VA. I have a aunt that lives in Jackonville Fl.. I plan to go to Disney World in the next four weeks. Please reply with info on how to contact you. Because I am Very interasted in buying one.
