--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 223 CELLULAR Ref: E1W00007 Date: 01/27/97 From: GEORGE ERDNER Time: 12:14am \/To: BRIAN LINGARD (Read 5 times) Subj: call delivery BL> Some carriers and i think Mobilink canada do it, have their BL> networks report the arrival of roamers to the person's home BL> switch so your switch will know you were last seen in cell site BL> so and so. BL> This is called automatic call delivery. It is the most seamless BL> way to roam. The brand name for it is Mobil-link (R), at least on the B side. For it to work, you have to turn your phone off & back on when you cross into a new territory or otherwise cause your ESN to be transmitted to the new system. The alternative is "Follow Me" roaming, where you must deliberatly dial an access code to annouce your presence in the new territory. I just had a major problem with a customer who had trouble roaming because he didn't know when he crossed into a new carrier's domain. I've asked the carrier my company is an agent for to provide a map of the US that shows the boundaries of the different B carriers, but they claim none exists. Every single piece of literature I've seen from many different carriers simply lists selected cities, with no way of knowing when you move from one carrier's zone to another. BL> the much touted follow me roaming has the switch you are on BL> advise your home switch you may be reached at a special BL> dynamically allocated telephone number so your home switch call BL> forwards your line to that number but for just one day. BL> The forwarding is renewed the first time you do a follow me roam BL> star function the next day too. That can be a blessing. Since you pay the LD charges on roaming calls that find you, it can be an advantage to be able to choose whether you can be reached or not. * OLX 2.1 TD * Help, I've fallen and I can't reach my beer! --- RG0511/CDRMAIL 1.06b * Origin: LOTL/2 * 412 746 3592 * lotl2.slip.lm.com * USofA (1:129/230) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 223 CELLULAR Ref: E1W00008 Date: 01/27/97 From: GEORGE ERDNER Time: 12:14am \/To: BRIAN LINGARD (Read 5 times) Subj: Cheap Batteries BL> Sorry to hear of your experience with no-name cellular batteries. BL> yes the original equipment ones are usually the best. Original equipment batteries are usually very good, but bear in mind that cellular manufacturers buy their batteries from battery makers -- they don't have their own factories. Often, the batteries sold by reputable third party accessory companies are made by the same companies that make the original equipment batteries. I've found, from working at two different cellular phone sales companies and lots of customer feedback, that ANY name-brand battery is usually pretty good, and most off-brand or no-brand batteries are pretty bad. * OLX 2.1 TD * Help clear the court system: Legalize Dueling! --- RG0511/CDRMAIL 1.06b * Origin: LOTL/2 * 412 746 3592 * lotl2.slip.lm.com * USofA (1:129/230) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 223 CELLULAR Ref: E1X00000 Date: 01/26/97 From: JOEL LAMBERT Time: 12:24am \/To: BEN (Read 5 times) Subj: DAMMIT! As I said, as originally envisioned by Bell Cellular, PCS would work within 50 feet of a sign saying your pcs works here and would not hand off to other sites. One system no one has discussed is one Philips proposed where you could have on-site cells within say a plant and outsiders would have their calls passed through to the network, but people with cellular phones in that plant would have their cellular phone work like their office phone, complete with abbreviated dialling of extensions and access to company network.
