For every -GE> phone that's -GE> cloned in order to provide cellular "extension" phone -GE> service, there are -GE> probably dozens cloned merely to gain fraudulent use of the -GE> cellular -GE> service. Cloning is not illegal bacause the phone companies -GE> are worried -GE> about people wanting two ppones with the same number, it is -GE> illegal -GE> because cloners make copies of other people's phones and -GE> then use the -GE> cloned phones to steal phone service. In this market both companies have implemented authentication, Cell One has done fingerprinting as well, not sure about Nynex, so that should help them out quite a bit with the fraud problem. Nynex has required pin codes for at least a year now, and they say that beginning Feb of this year they will take no new phones on their system that don't have authentication. We just signed up with them, our new phone has the authentication in it so we don't need to use a pin code. One carrier up here does have the ability to give you two or more phones on the same number, which is great for people who have an expensive plan and need a flop and a real phone on a same account. I've been reading on the net on various cellular industry pages that authentication is making a big dent in the cloning problem. --- * Origin: Computer Castle / 20 Lines / Newton, NH / 603-382-0338 (1:324/127) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 223 CELLULAR Ref: E1B00008 Date: 01/06/97 From: SCOTT CURRIER Time: 05:24pm \/To: GEORGE ERDNER (Read 6 times) Subj: TDMA -GE> When there aren't many phones accessing a given tower, TDMA -GE> is as clear -GE> as analog. Thanks for the reply, I haven't had an opportunity to try TDMA on the go, I used it once in a showroom. I hear that it doesn't fade very well either. I really like the standard AMPS system, I keep telling people that I will be the last FM holdout. --- * Origin: Computer Castle / 20 Lines / Newton, NH / 603-382-0338 (1:324/127) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 223 CELLULAR Ref: E1C00000 Date: 01/07/97 From: ED YEE Time: 03:23am \/To: BRIAN LINGARD (Read 6 times) Subj: TDMA BL> Bell Mobility Celluar and Can-tel in Canada are going to CDMA in BL> late 1997 I think. ClearNet uses an Integrated Digital Enhanced Network with Frequency Reuse and TDMA ( Time Division Multiple Access) and the calls are much clearer than Bell or Cantel. I have never had a lost call, drop out, or fading ither. Interesting? BRIAN LEO ... Protected Mode Xpress! It's hot! * Evaluation copy of Silver Xpress.
