Well, the last thing in the world my parents would do is get an Amateur licence....they were disgusted enough when I got mine. The coverage along the highway between Calgary and Medicine Hat, is pretty pour....and some of the repeaters along the way seem to be pretty dead. I don't know if there's somebody monitoring for emergency purposes only or not. I've thought about building an LTZ decoder for my scanner at home.... Locally, we've had no problems with calling 911 using the autopatch. When the call comes in, its automatically flagged as coming from an Amateur....this way they won't send emergency vehicles to the airport if the call drops. (our patch is located in the emergency services hq building there) Well, one change we made was the change the speed dial from *1 to *91.....the problem was sometimes the second digit drops when dialing *1x and getting 911 is kind of an annoyance. One of our local hams is a paramedic/dispatcher.....he set things up along with a couple other things during his term as president of our club (I served as secretary during that year). --- DLG Pro v1.1u4/PDQMail v2.60 * Origin: Lunatic Haven - Medicine Hat, Alberta CANADA (1:134/3002) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 223 CELLULAR Ref: DAN00003 Date: 06/18/96 From: BLAKE BOWERS Time: 06:37pm \/To: WAYNE NOCTON (Read 7 times) Subj: CLONED -> My point was, many B carriers are also A carriers, albiet in -> different RSA/MSA's. CDMA has a vastly superior sound quality they say. Not sure what the sound quality on GSM is like but why couldn't someone have agreed on a standard for the whole world? like tv. There is NTSC (Canada, US and odds and ends of other places) PAL (Europe and I think Japan) and SECAM (France and the former USSR). All have advantages and disadvantages. NTSC retained compatability with the installed base of black and white tv sets through developments in chip technology it got some of the features of PAL like automatic color setting etc. PAL retained compatability with the installed transmission networks of broadcsters but not home tv sets!
