For the estimated six million Americans suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder, such words interfere with daily life! For another 40 million people, such words alone make them THINK they have ADD. A disorder that does NOT go away on its own, ADD transforms untreated children into frustrated adults. And, adults who have children with ADD probably also have ADD themselves. In addition, many girls and women have ADD, although only recently have physicians begun to acknowledge this fact. From the co-authors of MIGRAINE: WHAT WORKS and BACK PAIN: WHAT WORKS (by Prima Publishing), comes Adult ADD: The Complete Handbook. Although ADD books have appeared on bestseller lists before, this is the first ADD book ever written by neurologists. In simple and friendly terms, co-authors David Sudderth and Joseph Kandel offer important and practical help to those leading frustrating lives stemming from their ADD. The doctors provide coping mechanisms, both psychological AND daily practical actions people with ADD can take, as well as an up-to-date guide to the latest technology that people with ADD will benefit from. In addition to providing readers a list of primary ADD symptoms and theoretic causes, the handbook walks sufferers through the steps to recovery by: * Suggesting where they should start and which doctor they should choose * Explaining what medicines (including Ritalin) are effective for ADD treatment * Offering complimentary treatments, such as changing sleep habits and diet, counseling, and biofeedback * Providing self-help strategies and coping mechanisms for daily problems * Presenting information on other illnesses that may be confused with ADD * Discussing real-life problems faced by people with ADD in their family and at work and offering practical solutions About the Authors David B. Sudderth, M.D., is the senior partner at the Neurology Center of Naples and cofounder of the Gulfcoast Spine Institute in Naples, Florida. He is a sought-after lecturer on ADD and pain management topics. Joseph Kandel, M.D. is founder and medical director of the Neurology Center of Naples in Florida. His articles have appeared in numerous medical journals, and he is a popular lecturer of spine disorders and pain management. I am holding what I downloaded today including a rather scathing editorial by Dr. Fulton Torrey. He lashes out at the politics in mental health that are keeping mental illnesses from being properly treated. That is also available at www.nami.org. I heartily encourage every parent reading this to find that web site and pay attention to most of what is written there. There are still treatment facilities around, doctors who specialize in the treatment of addicts, detox units, and courses in addiction that you can learn from. Bottom line: true ADHD is NOT caused by any MP>form of nutritional deficit, or reaction to ingested substance. Which means what? You are demonstrating what would be termed flight of ideas in a bipolar individual here, that just because the cause of the condition isn't a faulty diet that no remedial diet will help. And that just isn't the case at all. Once again, PKU is not the fault of a faulty diet. It is genetic in origin, but.....a remedial diet will prevent the worst of the problems it can cause. Just as the right kind of a diet will prevent problems from ONE KIND of ADHD. MP>Could you provide a specific reference for this claim. I ran it on three MP>different versions of MEDLINE and then DIALOG and could not find a MP>reference. Name of journal, date, volume number will do. Funny. They should read articles from doctors who have specialized in treating addicts. Then they would know about the talc deposits in the brain from the Ritalin and the damage to peripheral vision. I got that from the addicts who were in treatment. You could go to the nearest N.A. meeting and ask around. I bet someone there will be able to help you. MP>As for methylphenidate being the last resort, I firmly advocate that it MP>is the first one, as it has been demonstrably the most effective. It is MP>the most studied medication in the Pharmacopeia and with all of the MP>whiners protesting it and coming up with absurd "side effects", no one MP>has yet to come up with any medically demonstrable proof of their MP>whinings. Adrenaline works in two ways, both directly at the serotonin receptor site and through raising blood sugar. Any risk ~~~~~~~~ taking, exciting or illegal behavior is adrenaline producing, ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ stimulating a dysfunctional system. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One of the tasks involved in treating conduct disorder is redirecting behaviors which will stimulate adrenaline production without triggering unpleasant or dangerous social and relational consequences. ADHD children and adults also can benefit from adrenaline stimulation as a treament for their symptoms. The physical and emotional challenges may include sports and games, and stimulating books and movies, but may also include several periods of strenouous to moderate exercise daily, depending upon the physical fitness of the patient. Physical work- especially when done out of doors, also stimulates the serotonergic system. Sunlight is a wonderful stimulator of serotonergic activity. both children and adults with these disorders will feel more comfortable and experience less symptomatology with moderate daily exposure to sunlight. I've got papers by Kenneth Blume, Terry Nehr and others who have done the research on addiction and anything connected to it. The result? Build up the supply of neurotransmitters that the children of addicts do not get at birth and avoid most of the problems they will develop otherwise. * SLMR 2.1a * --T-A+G-L-I+N-E--+M-E-A+S-U-R+I-N-G+--G-A+U-G-E-- --- JCQWK * Origin: My Desk, Puyallup, WA (206) 845-2418 (1:138/255) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 222 ATTENTION DEF. She has no other MP>reason to be in a group like this. However, I would like to uncloak it. Why didn't you just ask? Is that too simple? My agenda is that I have seen too damn many humans with brains scrambled by drugs, both those they decided to take on their own, as well as those prescribed for them by so called professionals. I have been given too many antibiotics by the local HMO instead of being sent to a specialist when I kept complaining about the same problem. I finally got to a specialist at the Univeristy of Washington who properly diagnosed the problem. in the meantime, a few thousand dollars of insurance money as well as some of my own had been spent on the wrong treatment and I was still miserable. The same set of enzymes gets rid of all drugs be they antibiotics one doesn't need or street drugs, or the latest wonder drug prescribed by a doctor or dentist. I have one grandchild and also some other children that I am now trying to find doctors for who understand brain chemistry and alternative methods of treating hyperactivity. That is quite a search. We can find doctors who know something about this who are treating adults but we cannot find doctors yet who are doing prevention work with children of alcoholics who have symptoms of hyperactivity. In no case will any of the parents agree to the kids being given Ritalin, thank God. That is one thing that all agree upon. So we are left finding whatever books we can and whatever reasearch papers are available to parents and others on alternative methods of treatment for ADHD and allied conditions. Ain't that a shame? We are now in the same position with the children of alcoholics today that we were with their grandparents a few years back. And the cost keeps skyrocketing of not instituting a good prevention program for both addiction and mental health problems. That, sir, is my agenda. To use whatever I can towards the day when we have proper treatment for the children who otherwise will grow up handicapped by the stupidity of their elders. * SLMR 2.1a * Press any key to continue or any other key to quit --- JCQWK * Origin: My Desk, Puyallup, WA (206) 845-2418 (1:138/255)
