RF> My daughter is bipolar, but Jeremy's been tested he is ADHD/ODD. Have a stack of papers on the desk in front of me for a friend about the family problems of those who are in the same general "family" or sub classification of humans......bipolor disorder, alcoholism, ADHD and such are all related, so are conduct disorders. There is one common denominator in all of these.........low serotonin levels. That means getting those levels up by feeding the kids the amino acid that is the precursor for the serotonin and which the body needs in order to make it,,,,tryptophan. You might look around for some doctor who understands brain chemistry and diet. Or at least a damn good nutritionist who also understands the body chemistry involved in the other family problems. * SLMR 2.1a * I am not young enough to know everything. --- JCQWK * Origin: My Desk, Puyallup, WA (206) 845-2418 (1:138/255) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 222 ATTENTION DEF. So what do you do, go to a nutritionist who makes your child into a guinea pig for the purpose of finding truth? I have read about the other drug for high blood pressure showing proof that it works without the high side effects of Ritalin. This I am in an agreement with you. I do know that diet can play a role in our lives, but how much it can reverse certain problems, diseases, or behavior just has not been researched enough or proven. I'm not saying people should not read about it, each theory has its place in our lives, but I think we need to be realistic with what is theory and what is fact and make sure that whatever decision we make will not end up harming our children now or in the future; physically or mentally. Gee, I was looking at my file of articles from the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, etc. which confirm what I am saying. Bottom line: true ADHD is NOT caused by any form of nutritional deficit, or reaction to ingested substance. JK>On 10-14-96 I copied out a note from someone referring to the JK>research section of the NAMI web site, www.nami.org that said the JK>blood pressure drug Tenex significantly improved symptoms of ADHD JK>according to a study published in the January 1995 issue of the JK>Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I know of it, my son was part of the study. Coupled with methylphenidate, it works wonders. JK>For more information, call Mickey Nall at the American Academy of JK>Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 202/966-7300. JK>Ritalin is a nasty drug and should be the last resort anyone uses in JK>this day and age with other choices available. Among other things, JK>it can damage peripheral vision. Could you provide a specific reference for this claim. I ran it on three different versions of MEDLINE and then DIALOG and could not find a reference. Name of journal, date, volume number will do. As for methylphenidate being the last resort, I firmly advocate that it is the first one, as it has been demonstrably the most effective. It is the most studied medication in the Pharmacopeia and with all of the whiners protesting it and coming up with absurd "side effects", no one has yet to come up with any medically demonstrable proof of their whinings. JK>Stress causes low opiods leading to a sense of urgency. If high JK>amounts of dopamine are present high altertness and memory JK>enhancement are also present. Low amounts of GABA will cause JK>anxiety. Low amounts of serotonin will cause sleeplessness. JK>The trick is to understand which kids are born with lower than normal JK>amounts of certain brain chemicals and to feed the kid so that these JK>balance out. As yet, there is no scientific proof what-so-ever that ingesting neurochemical precursors has the slightest effect on neurochemical levels in the brain. ===>Mark Probert<=== email at MSProbert@aol.com --- * CMPQwk #1.4 * UNREGISTERED EVALUATION COPY * Origin: PC BBS : Massapequa, NY : (516)795-5874 (1:2619/110)
