I've heard rumours that caffeine can act as a mild medication (often used in self-medicating) for ADD... Is this true? I've no diagnosis with adult ADD, but if that were what I have and caffeine did have an affect, it could explain why my life goes to hell every time I try to cut back on caffeine (I estimate my daily caffeine intake at about 400 or more milligrams, with ill effects usually only if I go over that amount). There are, of course, other reasons I believe I have ADD (mostly based on reading Driven to Distraction, which reads like my life story), but this is an interesting aspect as well... Its good to hear that he is adjusting. Also, I know how hard it is to let go. We as parents have a tendency to want to tell them how wrong a decision is when they get older. My daughter is 22 and I still feel that way. Sometimes I bite my tongue and other times I do open my mouth, but in our relationship we respect each other enough to listen. Ultimately it is her decision and although I do not alway agree, I have come to respect that and this makes her taking any advise from me alot easier. You are right there is no such evidence, although when I was pregnant with the twins, I had gestational diabeties. They told me not to eat anything with nutrasweet, as they did not know whether it would harm the babies. This was 9 1/2 years ago. This came from a dietician at a hospital who specialized in diets for certain illness or conditions. Lets face it though if we didn't eat anything there was a scare on, we would not be eating at all. AF> Any ideas on how to avoid it? With most children it is easy, by just putting things in words that do not allow for choices or opportunity for arguments. With ADHD children it is tough. Anything can set them off. One wrong word, gesture, or look can make them have a temper-tantrum. The best advise is to know what sets your children off and try to avoid it or change the wording. Also it helps if the answer is no to give a time and/or date that they can do it, while trying not to use negative wording such as no. If you say not now you need to give a time frame when. You must also stick with it as they easily will call you a liar if you don't. This is the best I can do as far as advice goes. It won't cure all the temper tantrums, but it should curb some of them. Not that it's really on-topic for this conference, but I think that the main concern about Nutrasweet and pregnancy is that there are more than a few women who've forgotten that they have PKU. Folks with PKU (especially kids) shouldn't have Nutrasweet since it contains phenylalanine. It's a minor point, really, since most high-protein foods contain phenylalanine in far larger quantities.
