Even tho' you'd like to give up AH> altogether and you probably have in the past, you still have to try and AH> you'll be repeating yourself so often you wonder if it's sinking thru. AH> I can understand how you feel, really. We talk about things constantly. You have to. Sometimes I can tell them they are grounded , remind them in the morning and 2 hours later they have forgotten it. So yes, it is important to do it often. AH> You did kinda answer some of your own questions, questions if you're AH> spending enough time with them and the like. I think you're doing AH> just fine. Hang in there. Most of the time I do spend enough time. But there is always one of those days that so much has to be done that they don't get enough attention. AH> I was dismayed that tone of them turned to lighting paper. Our son AH> turned to using reams and reams of scotch tape from one and of his AH> bedroom to the other side. He had rigged it up so that if you walked AH> in blindly your chest/face was taped. I was annoyed as it was for AH> school, but I failed to undersatnd the reason, and with him, there was AH> no reason to do it. Bordom? Probably! Your right. It probably is bordom on top of impulsitivity. Somehow though that doesn't make ya feel comfortable when the things they do are so very dangerous. AH> As far as medicines go, unless instructed by your doctor, it wouldn't AH> be a good thing to hold or stop the medicines. If you did, you'd AH> pretty much have to start the whole cycle again and the further AH> possiblity of frustration. If they are taking it as part of their AH> daily routine, continue with it. They aren't on anything as of now. My 11 year old was a few year back. Things happened financially and we didn't have the money to continue it. I had him rediagnoised and they think his ADD symptoms are from depression. I am pretty sure that is not right. He's been fine in the depression department since school is out. The depression stems from school. The only other thing I can think of is that he is possible Bi-polar. Maybe he will go into another state of mind before school comes back. That will pretty much tell me something. Other than that I am considering a second opinion. It is not that I want them on medication, but they don't even understand why they do the things they do so that pretty much tells me that this is uncontrolled. AH> You mentioned that alot of focusing in the summer isn't needed. I'm AH> not sure what you mean by that. If you're referring to the giving of AH> their medications, then even more so. Just because it's the holidays AH> and the kids have all this free time, you can't ease of it because it's AH> easy. Any parent with 'hyper' kids will tell you pretty much the same AH> thing, perhaps in great detail. I meant as far as school is concerened. Of course I will be homeschooling them this year and I have already tested their reading skills and attention. This I do my self. I watch their attention at reading and this is how I determine how much attention they have. They tried to tell me my 8 year old is not ADHD. But during reading he has the attention of 10 minutes comfortably. After that he reads standing on his head of changing positions you know the regular ADHD stuff. He also has the choice of reading a book he wants to at reading time. So its not bordom. He also can not fall asleep until wee hours of the nite. Then gets up early. They haven't been too bad lately. I haven't seen any depression mostly hyper activity, impulsitivity, disorganization and with Jeremy lot of temper problems. So in the next week or so I will have to decide on something. They don't like being they way they are and of course I don't either. And if medication is called for I would like to start before we start our school so there are less problems to deal with. I notice a > small > improvement in the kids when they take ridilin. I also hear that it > doesn't > do anything and stunts growth. Are these true? It's really impossible to prove whether ritilin affects the growth rate of any one child, but several studies have proven that, AS A GROUP, kids who take ritilin are no shorter than a matched group of kids who don't. That does include children like mine who actually ate better on ritilin because he could sit at the table long enough to do it. I'm sure that some kids won't eat as well and this could affect the growth rate of THAT child. IOW, watch your kids and if you think it's adversely affecting them, talk to their doctor about it. Also, effect on appetite is dose-dependent, so a child who is not eating well might have a better appetite on a lower dose. As for not doing anything -- some kids respond to it better than others. My son Richie is 7 years old. He has progressed a great deal once he was diagnosed correctly with ADD. One of his talents that never ceases to amaze me is his expertise on computers. Granted his language/vocabulary skills need to catch up to his cronological age, but when he sits behind our computer, he can play complicated games that would take me weeks, or possibly months to get as good as him. For example, my husband installs a game on the computer like "Jill of the Jungle" where a woman evades a variety of obstacles and protects herself with weapons that are picked up along the way. Richie will watch my husband play this game for fifteen minutes, then Richie will play it just as well as my husband. On occasion, Richie has beaten my husband's high score. Richie has been taking Ridalyn for over 2 years now. The pediatric neurologist that saw him on his initial visit would have bet his bottom dollar that Richie had ADD. But being a good doctor, he didn't prescribe Ridalyn until several tests were done. During this summer, the doctor recommended that his dosage be reduced to just 10mg/day because he was having a difficult time going to sleep before 9 p.m.. During the school week, he takes 20mg/day. But I don't give him any medication over the weekend because I don't want to over-medicate him. Richie had an EEG done this last thursday. The result showed that he has a 75% chance that he would have a seizure. The neurologist prescribed Depakote. I have noticed a slight change in his behaviour. He is not as easily prone to physically harming someone or himself. I do have paperwork on the side effects of this medication, and I am keeping a very watchful eye on Richie for any signs. If anyone who reads this and takes Depakote, please leave me e-mail and let me know how your child or yourself are doing. My doctor told me when my son has one of his days to think of it as a mini PMS..the poor baby, I can relate to that :) which only makes it easier for me to understand and deal with. I have take him off of sugar, preservatives and red and yellow food coloring and given him mulit vitamins and I am starting to get good comments about him with others. It has only been about three to four weeks with the new diet ut if it works then maybe, just maybe no med ! I have put myself on the same diet to help him deal with what he can not have. I tell him we were born allergic to sugar and it makes us feel ill so we can't have it, then I remind him of all the great things we can have like apples, bannanas, welches grape juice , unsweetened apple juice, 7 grain breads, real peanut butter. If we are to buy something we have to read first. The ingredients then the instructions. I have made the quaker oats oatmeal cookies for him, well we did it together as it has honey in it and he can have honey and I have found that it does not yp him up. I monitor his food and then the behaviour and l can pretty well say that ice cream cones are out ! There is a lot of pain stalking do's and don'ts but it is all in the individual person I think. So far we are doing much better. Oh and the unsweetened candy I have found in the bulk food store actually there is only two kinds he can have, the banana and the mint the est have red coloring or annatoo in them and they are really bad for hyper kids. May I ask where you are writing from as l am from Peterborough Ontario Canada and my girlfriend that got the information on the 25 good things is nterested in how effective the bbs information is. I think pretty darn wonderful yself as it sure brought me to my sense on the topic. Get back to me if you can .
