I feel that they are both pretty special kids. Believe me when >I tell you that we have had our times, but the three of us spend a lot >of time together that is good too. Boy, do you have your hands full! Time is a precious commodity that too many kids don't get to share with caring adults. It's partly the fault of the economy, making it necessary for people to work too many hours, coming home too exhausted to spend quality time with their kids. It's partly the fault of this society, which has people convinced that kids need everything *but* parenting. A lot of parents are knocking themselves out trying to do the right thing but not realizing that time spent together is priceless. Despite what the right-wingers say, it doesn't matter who provides the quality time, either. It could be parents or grandparents or other family members, or neighbors or friends who care about the kids. The traditional family, which worked so well in the past, didn't really look like Ozzie and Harriet. > She is where the ADD comes from because >the more I read on it, the more I saw her. More and more adults are now being recognized as ADD, and most of them are "found" because their kids have it. I think that's a good sign, because, as you point out, that alerts family and doctors to look for it, and helps to provide early treatment. You're right, the earlier it's caught, the better. * SLMR 2.1a * 50% of our forefathers were female. --- I killed my WildCAT! * Origin: Pixie Moss BBS - Medford,NJ (609)953-2726 (1:266/125) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 222 ATTENTION DEF. It's not surprising that one of the most often recommended books on adults with ADD is titled, "Do You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy?" I had OCD in addition to the ADD, so when I was told that I wasn't "really trying", I had more to consider than laziness. I mean, if your brain keeps derailing while it counts pickets in a fence, and if you have this *need* to go over and touch the chair with your right hand because you just brushed against it with your left hand... that's *crazy* stuff, isn't it? And if you *think* you're trying, but all the grownups say you *aren't*, then doesn't that mean that you don't *know* what your mind is doing? It sure didn't help that I was told flat out that I belonged in an asylum. I spent much of my childhood trying to be invisible, so that no one would notice how weird I was, lest I be discovered and "put away". My husband wants me to fight the school district with RF>this thing for other children, but I'm not sure that that would be RF>logical with me homeschooling. What is your view? Other others for RF>that matter. School districts do change policy when parents are persistent. Sometimes it takes only one parent to get the ball rolling. It does help to have numbers. School boards must listen especially to numbers of people. One sad reality of schools is that funding and staff support really have an effect on how well schools can respond to kids with special needs. When funding is cut (either at the State or Federal level) schools become less able to meet all the needs of all the kids--including and especially ADD, ADHD, BD, (behavioral) and handicap. This has happened to me several years and is happening next year again. I will have an increase in IEP kids and one is extremely violent. However, we are losing 50% of our para-pro (classroom aide) time. When class sizes are up support is lessened. Suppose we had class sizes of 100 kids. Could one teacher manage all those kids and meet their educational needs. OF course not! And the districts would agree. The question is, when is that number sufficiently lowered to ensure success for all students? Is it 30? 20? I have heard that research shows that class sizes of 18 help to maximize the learning environment. Yet the average class size in our district is 25-28. I have had as many as 30 kindergartners in one year (per classroom). Throw in a couple of ADHD and the problem is magnified. Districts must be held accountable for avoiding and opposing increase spending in the classrooms. Many districts have too many administrators. It's ok for the teachers to be overburdened but not an administrator. If their work load get too much, they can (and often do) hire another administrator. Im going to come off my rock now....It's down on administration day. dan RF> DT> Hope things work out for you.....and your child.. RF> RF> Thanks alot. RF> RF> Regina RF> RF> RF>...
