JOHN PUMMILL was thinking about Help! and keyed into cyberspace: JP> three bus suspensions JP> paddlings weekly JP> suspended five times JP> three or four teacher conferences Corporal punishment on an ADHD child is reprehensible. It is also useless. It does not work. Is you child classified special ed? If he is not, get him classified. He is entitled to the protection from this abusive school. JP> licks three times in one day JP> suspended for three days, suspended from the bus and three licks all JP>in one day... the teacher was on the phone on and off with Audra all JP>day trying to work with David, the principle stated that she DECIDED JP>that David needed to be suspended. David could not be suspended without a hearing if he is special ed identified. And, demand getting discipline rules (i.e., no spanking or corporal punishment) into his IEP. Some researchers have called ADHD one of the disorders under the "Reward Deficiency Syndrome". IOW, these kids respond to positive discipline, rather than negative. They will want to earn rewards. JP> We are about to take no prisoners. This principle will go down in JP>flames before all of this is over and she will be lucky if we do not JP>sue for damages. Much of the stress this year has been due to David's JP>grades in school and we have had much contact with the school. I hate to get into JP>this with the system but it has to change. Take no prisoners. Go to public school board meetings and name names (and, let the press know you will be there). This is one of my favorite guerilla tactics. Works wonders. Another tactic (prevents lying): Every conversaion with the principal should be summarized in a letter to her. Make certain it is complete. Offer her the opportunity to make any corrections, in a letter back to you, and tell her that the statements of YOUR letter will be deemed factual if no response is received. Require her response to be sent certified, return receipt. You should also do this when your son is disciplined in any way. This way you have documentation. Good luck. And give them hell. ===>Mark Probert<=== email at MSProbert@aol.con --- * CMPQwk #1.4 * UNREGISTERED EVALUATION COPY * Origin: PC BBS : Massapequa,NY : (516)795-5874 (1:2619/110) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 222 ATTENTION DEF. TH> It really amazes me that we have to fight these people to do what they TH> are supposed to do anyway. Their job is to teach our children, and if TH> our children can't learn in the "normal" or "conventional" way then TH> they are obligated, by law, to provide them with an alternative. We TH> shouldn't have to jump through hoops for our children to receive what TH> they have a fundamental right too. I know what you mean. That is why I am going to homeschool. I am sick of fighting this school system. Of course, I understand that not every- one has the opportunity to do this. I had to make a choice between going to work and helping the family out financially or homeschooling. But I feel my children are more important. So my husband is backing me up all the way. TH> My daughter also scored very high in IQ...the idiot who claimed to be TH> a psychologist said to me..."she's a very bright child, just immature TH> and shy." I looked him right in the eye and said..."I too was a shy TH> immature child, but I still learned how to read...Mara can't even TH> grasp the concept!" TH> Theresa :} Isn't it amazing how the schools want to try to get over on us parents. Its like they think we are so ignorant. Of course, years ago with my first child I was ignorant. I believed the school system when they told me my child was lazy. And that cost her an education. But no more. I will have my children tested fully and in case something happens I will be able to fight the school system to get them help in school. Of course, I hope I don't have to as I don't want to see them again if possible. Call the state board my help, unfortunately unless they child is labeled severe emotionally disabled or some learning problem shows up they don't have to give him help. This is why I am getting full testing done to show them which areas are a real problem. The school testing here is not very complete so I will go several steps farther. This can be helped with the use of medications and testing. The educators simply want to save money and not give these children and teachers the resources and help needed to allow them to function in a classroom environment. I know of several children put on medication that act perfect in the classroom. I also know of teachers that simply want these children out of the classroom because it is too much work for them adapt some of their teaching methods for these children. I understand classrooms may be too big, but the law states that ALL children have the right for quality education and until the system includes children like ADHD and teaches teacher to notice the signs and eport it as a possible problem in the classroom (instead of just labeling these kids as troublemakers); until the educators revamp the budget to help these children than I believe it is up to the teachers to do what ever they can to teach these kids and work with the parents so the job can get done. Putting these children in a seperate classroom only hinders their problem. We as parents want to help the teachers out, but for some reason we keep getting SHUT OUT!!!
