He told GF> me his vet which is a old country DR. that it was ok as long as he gave I have been giving my dogs Ivomec since 1987 and have never had a problem with it. I have 20 dogs which I show and breed. I give it once a month to ALL my dogs and have never had any birth defects.. I start giving it to puppies when they are six weeks old. GF> the dog 1 cc per 50 pounds of dog weight. He gives it to the dog in GF> some milk once a month like regular heart worm preventatives. Does 1 cc per 50 pounds is to large a dose. You need to weigh the dog and give the exact amount for each pound that the dog weighs. I will enclose a dosage chart and the end of this message. I just squirt it into their mouth with a 1cc syringe without needle. The amount is so small they hardly notice it. GF> sell you the stuff which is more expensive. Thanks, Gary Ivomec is ivermectrin which is the same thing that is in Heartguard. But the right dosage is important. It kills all worms except tapeworms which is carried by fleas. So I give Ivomec (cattle variety) once a month. I also have no fleas...even with 20 dogs...how many people even with one dog can say that. I don't use any of the pills or rub ons for flea protection as they can cause birth defects in dogs used for breeding. Here is the dosage chart I use for Ivomec... If you are not able to weigh your dogs accurately and measure the dosage correctly, don't use Ivomec. IVOMEC Dosage to be given orally for heartworm prevention and removal of round worms. LBS CC. SC> Good for you. I hope you did call animal control. Speaking as SC> someone who works for an animal shelter, it really boils my SC> biscuits how some people treat thier pets. The other day I saw a Rottie SC> Obedience Class and the teacher's Rottie was beautifully trained SC> .. Obviously a very intelligent and loving owner took the time SC> to train him properly. As it should be done. That is exactly why I maintain that it's the pet owner who should be licensed, and NOT the dog... If a prospective pet owner could just take a test to determine their knowledge & fitness to take responsibility for an animal and THEN be granted the privilege to own a pet (like testing for a driver's license), I think that there would be far less animal abuse (not to mention a reduction in the UNwanted pet population) and less abandoned animals. Anyway, welcome to our little echo. I'm looking forward to hearing your perspectives as an animal shelter worker. Is the shelter a "no-kill" or standard shelter? Don't feel bad if it is a standard shelter -- we all know that putting unwanted animals down is a sad part of life, & a reminder to all of us about WHY we all have our dogs fixed and strive hard to educate others about taking that same responsible step. Your work is probably pretty difficult -- every day you must see countless animals come through who will be marked for death. I'm sure it becomes worthwhile, though, when one of the animals on "death row" is instead adopted out to a nice home... Shoshona, I'm addressing this one to you because you're on the west coast and I'm putting it up on the east coast on May 15 and, if it arrives, I'm curious as to how long it takes to get to you. This is the board in Florida to which I telnet several times a week. I uploaded this poem twice from PSL (my local board) in Houston, Texas, and two things didn't happen. The first non-happening was that *nobody* commented on it which surprised me until I discovered the second non-event. That was my realization that I had never seen it appear on the Florida board. So then I put it up on this Florida board and two days later it showed up on my board in Texas but again no one mentioned having seen it, and I thought it was just the kind of poem that would generate some comments from the rescue people about planning to reprint it in their newsletters. So I'm thinking there's a glitch somewhere in the net again. Please acknowledge receipt of this note with the poem if you get it. Thanks. Here's one that's sure HH>>to make you cry. It hit me hard. A Stray's Prayer (Author Unknown) Dear God, please send me somebody who'll care! I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair. My body is aching, it's so racked with pain, and dear God I pray, as I run in the rain, That someone will love me and give me a home, a warm cozy bed and a big juicy bone. My last owner tied me all day in the yard Sometimes with no water, and god that was hard. So I chewed my leash, and God I ran away. To rummage in garbage and live as a stray. But now God, I'm tired and hungry and cold, and I'm so afraid that I'll never grow old. They've chased me with sticks and hit me with stones, while I run the streets just looking for bones! I'm not really bad, God, please help if you can, for I have become just a "Victim of Man!" I'm wormy, dear God, and I'm ridden with fleas, and all that I want is an Owner to please! If you find one for me, God, I'll try to be good, and I won't chew their shoes, and I'll do as I should. I'll love them, protect them and try to obey when they tell me to sit, to lie down or to stay. I don't think I'll make it too long on my own, cause I'm getting so weak and I'm so all alone. Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry, cause I'm so afraid God, that I'm gonna die. And I've got so much love and devotion to give, that I should be given a new chance to Live! So dear God, please answer my prayer, and send me someone who will REALLY care...
