Different product. Invisible fences have their uses but NOT as a containment for a dog. They do nothing to stop a wandering dog who is not wearing the special collar from coming onto your property, nor kids that might like to torment your animal. And some dogs will take the 'hit' in order to chase that cat/squirrel/etc across the street, but not be willing to take it to get back into their own yard. Best uses of invisible fencing are inside a physical fence as a second barrier or around flower or vegetable gardens that you don't want the dog into. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: Get All Your Fido Here! telnet://docsplace.dynip.com (1:3603/140) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 121 DOGS Ref: F5G00017 Date: 04/13/98 From: ELVIS HARGROVE Time: 12:09pm \/To: CHRISTINE LABONTE (Read 0 times) Subj: collar -> dog. It is hard plastic with softer plastic protrusions all around and you put batteries in it. It shakes and turns and scoots...and then stops and laughs like a loon. We originally got it for the cats. They hate it...not dignified enough. But the dogs could chase it around, pick it up and throw it and then just stand and wait for it to laugh, until the batteries run out. Subject: Texas psychotherapist re: animal abuse Posted for Denise Porter.... ---------------------------------- ATROCITIES AGAINST ANIMALS ROUTINELY COMMITTED BY GANGS IN SOUTH TEXAS My name is Denise Porter and I am a psychotherapist in Brownsville, Texas. There has been=A0 two brutal cases of animal cruelty perpetrated recently by gang members in the Rio Grande Valley. The first occurred on September 12, 1997 when two juveniles and three adults, Adrian Adame, Juan Garcia, and Gerardo Zamora allegedly stoned a dog to death in the Las Palmas housing project outside of Harlingen, Texas.=A0=A0 A witness identified the perpetrators of this crime and stated that a crowd gathered around them to watch and to cheer. Investigators put together a case against the suspects, and they were arrested and charged with animal cruelty on October 9, 1997.=20 All those involved in this atrocity are gang members and the three adults have prior criminal records. The torture and death of animals is part of gang initiation rites and is a gang activity. An informant who used to live in this area has told us that the murder of helpless animals is a daily activity of the gang that controls this neighborhood.=A0=A0=20 The adults have pled not guilty and there is a jury trial set for June 22, 1998.=A0 Unfortunately, the adolescents have received deferred prosecution meaning that if they follow the terms of a six month contract, they will not be prosecuted. The contract says that they must commit no other crime, follow a curfew, and attend school. They will not have to receive therapy nor do they have any community service hours to do. It is very disappointing that the juveniles have received only a "slap on the wrist" for this=20 vicious and violent crime. Also, it is doubtful that the adults would have been prosecuted if I and other animal lovers=A0 had not been involved in the beginning - pushing hard for prosecution. Historically, animal cruelty has not received adequate consideration here in the Rio Grande Valley, even though research has shown that this violence will most likely escalate toward humans. We are urging everyone to write to city officials to demand that those involved be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, that the court impose the maximum sentence allowed under Texas law against those found guilty and that none of the parties involved ever be allowed to have any kind of animal in the future. Finally, urge the judge to order those found guilty of=A0 this crime to receive court-ordered psychological therapy and=20 to have to do community service hours.=20 In the second case, a dog was found skinned and his four paws were cut off. There was no sign of any other trauma to the body which would have accounted for the death. Police Chief Correon stated that he believes this atrocity was perpetrated by one of the 23 gangs which control this small town. Moreover, he stated that he believes that one or more of the gangs are involved in "devil worship" with this latest torture of an animal being a part of=A0 satanic ritual. He went on to say that there have been two other cases of animal=20 torture in the last year-one cat was crucified and two puppies were disemboweled.=A0 Evidently, the bodies of these animals were found the day following certain "unholy days" of satanic worship. It is not known whether the gangs are truly practicing satinism=A0 However, this gang violence must be investigated. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that this case will be prosecuted because the police failed to see that a=A0 necropsy was performed;=20 The body was immediately taken to the animal shelter and cremated. It is hard to see how the police had any intention of prosecuting this case until concerned citizens became involved. However, Police chief Carreon has told me that he would now like to build a case for prosecution if any leads turn up.=A0=20 It is vital that we who care about animals and people work to raise national public awareness about the link between violence towards animals, violence towards humans and criminality. Research over the past 25 years has consistently and conclusively shown that violent offenders, including serial killers, have childhood and adolescent histories of severe and repeated acts of cruelty to animals. Furthermore, the abuse of animals is highly correlated with child, spouse, and elder abuse. Finally, animal cruelty is a criterion for the diagnosis of child and adolescent conduct disorder, which is the precursor of adult anti-social personality disorder. Those with adult anti-social personality disorders are the career criminals that inhabit our prisons. Tragically, those who abuse animals are often victims of or witnesses to, family violence, making this also a social service agency issue. Animal cruelty is very much a=A0human issue, too, and=A0violence is not only confined to the Rio Grande Valley -- making this also a=A0 national issue. Since animal abuse is highly predictive of criminality and violence against people, as well as diagnostic for child abuse we must take it seriously.
