RA> I was wondering if anybody out there has had experience with the RA> so-called "training" or "barking" collars -- battery-operated RA> devices supposed to give the dog mild electric stimulus in the RA> effort to stop unreasonable barking. If you feel you absolutely MUST use some sort of training collar, a better alternative is the collar that squirts citronella into the dog's face... it is more humane. OTOH, I'm also sure you will be barraged with posts from folks with some tried & true methods for breaking your dog of the habit -- such as a soda can partially filled with pennies to rattle at the dog when barking for no apparent reason. Finally, I'll add this: Jack Russell Terriers (JRT) are high-energy dogs, easily bored, and always looking for adventure... A good share of the problem could be that you & your family are not providing Jackie with enough stimulation/diversion. JRT's *NEED* to be doing something -- they were bred to hunt & work, & they were bred to be VERY ACTIVE... Just because you may or may not hunt does not mean that Jackie is not interested in working... So, try giving her more attention, more play time, and take her for long walks to work off some of that energy... That will help cut down on the barking from boredom problem... Let us know how it goes, OK? Shoshona Bieman, 1:103/505 |\_/| A righteous man has regard Moderator: DOGHOUSE Echo /@ @\ for the life of his beast. Imagine a world where people have to take a class on proper dog care & ownership -- and pass the final exam with high marks to be licensed to own a dog! It might not be a bad idea for parents as well, especially considering the number of irresponsible, abusive parents out there (don't even get me started on the welfare "moms" who keep popping kids out to get more AFDC money -- then blow it all on crack, booze, or some other drug all while their kids go hungry!)... Anyway, I'm sure everyone can see the correlation to animal & child abuse (you made reference yourself) -- I don't need to labor the point... sigh... I actually do, and on rare occasion I stop a message from going out that I know will violate an echo's rules and could result in my board losing access to the echo... but it is a *VERY* rare occurence on Shofar... As for the statement that Sysops are responsible, to take a more realistic tack, it simply means we (Elvis and myself) expect the Sysop to take appropriate action if we must contact them about banning a user from DOGHOUSE... And this should also be a very rare occurence. Since Elvis and I took over moderating duties on DOGHOUSE, there has been no trouble, and no trouble-makers. We prefer it this way so we can simply participate in all the fun DOG-scussions... I hope this answer satisfies you. If not, would you please pursue it further in netmail with Elvis & myself? This way we will avoid cluttering DOGHOUSE with off-topic discussions. Thanks! Shoshona Bieman, 1:103/505 |\_/| A righteous man has regard Moderator: DOGHOUSE Echo /@ @\ for the life of his beast.
