TR>It is. For this $100 bux (max) I have gotten from users this year, I TR>have had (been required) to get a new modem, 1 new drive, 1 new LAN TR>card. Clearly this isn't even a break-even point. I'm not in this to TR>get rich, but I'm not in this to lose my money to benefit Joe Doe TR>who calls in to grab files. To add true internet connection would TR>cost additional thousands in hardware and dedicated lines and telco TR>lines. Clearly again it isn't worth it. I find that the board typically isn't worth calling if the SYSOP doesn't even use the system. There are numerous systems here in my direct calling area, and I think I'm the only sysop who USES my own system. hard to believe I've been doing this since 1994, and I'm only 19. Most everyone else.....I suppose...has "retired" to the internet. By the way....I still average around 40-50 calls per day. I have 2 lines [really only need one...but I've got internet access as well, and I like to have a spare line for that....so I've got 2 lines...and when I'm on the internet (which is getting to be less and less), only one line is available for calls. :) Fortunately, my NON-FIDONET node [2] is also the internet node. :) Later, Jay Fuller ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Internet: jfuller@pcs-i.net Fidonet Netmail: 1:3607/22 -->> Internet HOMEPAGE: http://www.pcs-i.net/jfuller <<-- "Replace your sex drive with a disk drive, and you become a SysOp!" -----------------------Cullman, Alabama 35055--------------------------- --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: Deep Space Nine BBS - [205] 734-0818/734-0763-Cullman AL (1:3607/22) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 220 GEOWORKS Ref: DEC00027 Date: 10/06/96 From: JAY FULLER Time: 11:58pm \/To: STU GRANT (Read 1 times) Subj: IS FIDONET FATALLY ILL? SG> The board will probably shift from serving the community to SG>serving me and furthering my specific business interest. SG> SG> Nothing is set at the moment, but that's the way I'm leaning. Stu.......that's what I've seen happening here as well - except my board not only serves ME, but it serves the general public as well. You have quite a selection of geoworks files....and I've got quite a few of them here on Deep Space Nine. If you're about to remove the rest of them, could I send you a backup tape or something and get the files FROM you so I can offer them online here on Deep Space Nine?
