This is my first entry (in writing) to the geoworks chat, although I have been a very happy user of Ensemble since beginning computing (with the able assistance of geoworks software -first 'Pro, then 2.0) about 2 years ago. I'm wondering about the possibility of using a ram disk for the swap file, which would naturally be swifter than having gw write to the hard drive. But is it possible, and how large does it need to be? (I have 6 Mb Ram). I'm not dissatisfied with my current geoworks' speed: it's fine. But if it can be even more snappy, then even better! Also, someone told me DR dos 6.0 'is full of bugs'. I've been using it because the taskswitcher, taskmax, is catered for in Ensemble. I've not had any problems with DR dos, but the fellow's comment intrigued me. I have a vague recollection that there was something on the ramdisk in a GEIGA newsletter, but don't know if that's the case, or if I'm dreaming. ok, bye for now. -Wayne L. All the ones I have ever had were linked by hard mechanical methods from the button to the eject mechanism. They work just as well with the power off as with it on, which shows that it is a purely mechanical link. So how could any software lock it up? The small Macintosh computers (basic Mac, and Mac Plus) had an electrical eject, and NO eject button on the front of the drive, but there was a small hole where you could poke in a bit of wire to manually eject if the electrical one didn't work. But it couldn't be locked out, either. Greg ... Now i'm WL> waxing lyrical. Anyway, ta again. Hi Wayne, I have used DR-DOS 6.0 as a base for Geoworks Ensemble since I changed from my old Commodore 64 to my first 286. It has been reliable, and I can attribute no problem to the DOS. I believe the problem area was Microsoft. That company would go out of its way to break compatability with any OS other than its own and its applications. Windows was one notorious example. Have no fears running DR-DOS and Geoworks Ensemble. It is, if not a match made in heaven, at least as close to perfect match as can be made on this earth. The reason why (at least the way I understand it) is that Geoworks and Digital Research worked together during the development of DR-DOS. In any case, DR-DOS was ahead of MS-DOS in just about every area of true functionality. It is just that B. Gates was a better salesman. Just in case my signature line throws you off a bit, the computer that is in the US with my family has the DR-DOS/GWE combination running (quite well) on it.
