First, I run OS/2 Warp on the computer I use. I run Windows 3.1 on a second computer that is functioning as a voice mail answering machine (386SX-16 w/4Mb). My wife's/childrens' machine is primarily DOS with some Windows 3.1 for games. I currently do not have any networking capability, but am very interested in the possibility. If I get the OS/2 machine into a LAN capable state, what would be needed to get the voice mail machine to where I could access it and conversely, to allow access to the OS/2 machine when the 386 is taking a host mode data call? I realize this is a hodge-podge mix, but personal preferences and necessities dictate. A few of the questions I really think I am looking to have answered without having to go read boxes somewhere, is whether WFW a) is Windows 3.11 by another name b) requires only a network card to function (no add'l software) c) can 'talk' to other types of machines on the network Any takers on answering these questions? BTW, no opinion is being expressed about the quality or desirability of any of the software mentioned. (g) If you get OS/2 workstation ready (or Lan ready), then it should be able to announce itself to any other stations connected. WFWG will do the same thing. WFWG will allow you to share drives and peripherals such as printers and CD-ROMs, etc. I connected a laptop the other day using the EPP (Enhanced Parallel Port) with a special adaptor, but I would stick with a nice NE2000 compatible net card for the moneys worth. The $34 dollar ones seem to work just as well as the $100 Etherlinks. Hope this helps, Joe ...
