CL> This is what I had heard, too. I got Ben a sturdy nylon one, quite CL> thick so it wouldn't hurt him in any way. He managed to break it CL> when he lunged for something... :( So I turned it into a halter! It CL> was quite amuzing the first time I took him out for a walk with it CL> on. He would try to lunge ahead, but his head would be turned by the CL> lead on the halter, so he would have to stop and come back. I truly CL> enjoyed not having to fight with him. *IF* I've heard correctly, the nylon choke-style collars are not as effective or safe as the chains. I believe it is because: 1) Nylon does not make the rude noise the chains do, which deprives you of part of the benefit of the chain (getting his attention). 2) The nylon creates a *thin*, continuous band of pressure that can cut into the dog's throat. Chain links do NOT create a continuous band of pressure AND you can select a large link size which better distributes the pressure, making it much more safe. 3) Metal links are much more durable than a strip of nylon and some plastic rings. When you're walking your dog, you can rest assured the choke chain will not break, thereby offering more protection. CL> Not to sound ignorant, but what is a MinPin? Is it short for CL> Miniature Pinscher ? Yup, MinPin is canine "short-paw" for Miniature Pinscher. Do you know about MinPins? Do you need me to post some info on my favorite breed? CL> He has his regular collar on at all times, as well as a red bandana CL> (wellllll, he looks *cute* with it on! And it's not tight, it would CL> slip over his head if it got caught on something...) His tags are on CL> there. If I were to use a choke, it would only be for when he's on a CL> leash, so no problem there! :) Hey, you won't get any opposition from me over Ben's bandana -- I think bandanas look cute on dogs... AAMOF, I much prefer seeing a dog sport a bandana than seeing a dog with bows (UGH!) in it's fur, spritzed with perfume, and it's claws brightly painted in the color-of-the-month! At any rate, I'd like to get Gabi her own little bandana... ;-) Shoshona Bieman, 1:103/505 |\_/| A righteous man has regard Moderator: DOGHOUSE Echo /@ @\ for the life of his beast. Yes, I could spend hours on here spinning stories about Boris & Jackie. Both are active, happy dogs and always eager to get into mischief -- or chase P.C., our cat. (P.C. = Pussy Cat!!!) Was wondering if anybody in this conference has any ideas about training an older Jack Russell terrier. Jackie is completely house-broken; that's not the problem. She'll come when she's called and obey sit and down commands -- but only inside the house. Outside, it's as if she completely sheds all her training and becomes and other animal -- one who just loves to race all over the place and who simply will NOT come when called. So romps in the park or schoolyard are out. We had our back yard made escape-proof, so we can let her out on her own. But it would be so nice to take her to the park or let her loose at the cottage. Boris is no problem in this regard and in fact is probably too lazy to run away! Any ideas? AR> Everything has been running smoothly for a long time, so I AR> would suggest keeping the rules the same as before. After AR> all, if it ain't broke, there is no reason to "fix" it. Hehehe... That is essentially what Elvis and I have planned... We want to maintain the status quo and not be wasting our time micro-managing DOGHOUSE and driving folks away. We took on the job of moderating to keep a great echo going -- not to change it! We are taking Michael Stroh's original rules file and condensing it, making it shorter & easier to read (Michael's rules were very well-written, but verbose). This way we have something to point to as a "standard" when someone is being disruptive, but we're *NOT* going to beat folks over the head with the rules and demand their complete acquiescence to our wills, their first-born pups, etc. Our goal is to simply keep things friendly -- all without becoming penny-ante dictators (or what some in Fido call "goderators")... We just want to have fun -- along with everyone else! Does this help & assure you?
