Messed me up for life. :-) Then I took two years of Spanish in college. That apparently didn't mess me up because I met the professor's daughter. A couple of years later I got married to her. Now we get this odd mix of English and Spanish. I've got newspapers from Mexico in one room of the house (did I mention my wife's family is Mexican?), and we're planning a second trip to Mexico next year. Ah, carnitas! And my great-grandfather wouldn't have had one white parent. What's important today is that we work toward preventing this kind of thing from happening again and to restore as much of what has been lost via treaty violations as possible. I fully agree. That is why I am enthused about this echo. It seems to me that other minority groups in America have political clout,WE need some as well. When I hear of equal hiring on jobs,and having representive employment;I hear them speak of Blacks,Mexicans,and even Asians,but I never hear them saying that we need to hire more Native Americans. If it was not for our helping the whites to learn to adapt to our country,they would have died off. We deserve more consideration than we are getting I think. Don't be put off if at first the people you contact seem less than enthusiastic about your offers to volunteer; nowadays they tend to be inundated with less-than-sincere people who show up a few times then vanish when it becomes clear that volunteer work in indian organizations is real work, not sitting around learning ancient wisdom from the elders.
