Nor does an interest in learning about Indian people, their >history, the history of Indian-non-Indian relations, issues currently >faced by Indian people, or, for that matter, going to a pow-wow and >buying artwork produced by an Indian artist. (nodding vigorously) SB> People who are simply interested in Indian things are sometimes SB> threatened by all the wanabi talk, when they really are happy with SB> being who they are. (contented smile and sigh) RA> I suspect they are afraid that if they show their interest, they'll be RA> labelled as wanabis. Speaking for myself (and I always do), I'm afraid of foot in mouth disease. :/ What I really, really wannabe, is a decent human being. RA> The d.c. is 'great' at labelling people based on RA> superficial appearances and quick judgments, and this is probably the RA> only experience they have of how things are done. errr.... d.c.? SB> Hey, I'm interested in folk tales from all over SB> the entire world, but I really am OK not being a descendent of a SB> Spanish princess. And I'm happy with how and who I am. I'm not a fanatic for searching the family tree and whether I descend from kings or criminals doesn't change the *me* of me. I learned the term "Cherokee princess" (g) from Sondra when I (by way of introduction) told her I didn't have a drop of n.a. blood and didn't collect things n.a., but was just interested in learning more. I agree, just being interested in knowing about something doesn't make you a wannabe. ___ Blue Wave/386 v2.30 [NR] --- QScan/PCB v1.19b / 01-0462 * Origin: << Don's BBS >> Stratford, NJ. My brain refused to work, because it was confronted with making an unpleasant decision regarding "tomorrow". For me it would also mean not going to bed at all if I took tomorrow with me, as I most likely wouldn't sleep much anyhow. Thanks for the response. BTW - In retrospect, having made my decision about "tomorrow", I slept like a bear in winter that night. ___ Blue Wave/386 v2.30 [NR] --- QScan/PCB v1.19b / 01-0462 * Origin: << Don's BBS >> Stratford, NJ. Having an Italian husband, I can assure you that Italian SB> culture is *very* important to some Italians. This term I am taking a class in East Asian Art. (Think China) Right now we are in Buddhism and it's influence on China's art because Buddhism came from India. Makes me think of how MUCH or how many times other cultures get "used" (maybe exploited, acculturated, assimilated, influenced) by others. I wonder if Buddha is rolling over in his grave because Buddhism has been "altered" so MANY times or has been "sold" for "commercial profit". Actually, "they" aren't "going" anywhere. The land they have purchased will (for all practical purposes) be allowed to revert to the "wild state" and will be open to anyone. There _are_ _some_ buildings on the property that they _might_ use for a "caretaker's residence", but that has not been published as far as I know. But no one or group is going to actually "live" on the land. There was another purchase near the town of Joseph (or maybe Enterprise) where the Nez Perce hope to open an interpretive cultural center. The horse program and the wolf program are both on the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho, afaik. I still don't know which one is right or real traditional. But I don't care. Sometimes it is even nicer to create an own interpretation, what do you say?
