Unless the 14400 Sportster you're using was made in 1992, you'll probably be out of luck trying to get the 16800 HST speed. But, just in case you *do* have a fairly old Sportster, here's how to find out if you can get the 16800 HST (don't worry, you won't damage anything by doing this): Go into your fave comm program, and type ATI7 (enter) to display the ROM version. If it says SUPERVISOR 4.1, you *win*. If not (i.e. the version is 4.2 or higher, stop here, don't get your hopes up. If it *does* say SUPERVISOR 4.1, type ATGW03C6,22GW05CD,2F (enter). Type ATI7 (enter) again. It should say OPTIONS HST,V32. Use the B1 command in your modem initialization string to activate the HST speed. When you connect, you should get a 16800/ARQ message. ... The server's CO must connect through to the 56k client's CO via a completely digital link. The line from the client's CO to the client's modem would be analog (Plain Old Telephone Service - POTS.) I did, and the modem now dials a helluva lot faster (about 2 to 4 times faster)... and solid as a ROCK... :) People often ask for the *BEST* initializing string, but sometimes local teleco are somewhat different, one's best string might not be other's best... Like some machines can accept faster dial tone than others, I have tried the tone duration from 70ms down to 20ms, and find that although 35ms duration does work, but not every time... and settled with 40ms duration... Try configuring your modem, it is not hard, and it is not too dangerous, anything goes wrong, just type AT&F and reset to factory setting... I think you'll find it fun... :) ... (I guess that was what my origional question should have been). > The server connection to the telco must be digital. Your connection doesn't change. It is that simple. The digital signal from the server to the client is converted TO analog ONE time and NEVER back till the client modem processes the signal. The key feature here is that the analog signal is not processed for sampling by being bandwidth limited. This wider than usual bandwidth is the key and is also the reason for the extra power contained in an x2 signal. --- * Origin: CRIMP BBS (1:2410/116)
