If long distance calls are the only problem, then make sure you have a long distance prefix designated in the software (example: "1," which causes the modem to dial a one, and the comma makes the modem wait 2 seconds before dialing the rest of the number). Also make sure that you have enough time designated to process the call. Long distance calls can take a little longer than local calls to process, so include S7=60 or S7=90 to give the modem plenty of recognition time to start the fax. An example string for the modem might be AT&F&C1&D2&K3S7=90. Also, check your fax software to make sure you have ended your initialization string properly. You will probably be happier with a modem from a recognized modem manufacturer, like Motorola, Hayes, or USR. Sometimes a good "yardstick" is the thickness of the manual for the _modem_ (not the manual for any software that comes with it). The thicker the manual, (generally) the better the product. TTFN. If you're having no trouble with the buffer set to 14, leave it. Should you run into problems, though, you might consider lowering it. I can't imagine why the DTE speed is not being returned with a W1 selection. W2 should return the DTE speed, but not the error correction information and so on. Getting that information is not critical to the comm program operation, though, so you might be better off using W2. It certainly sounds like the modem is wonked, though. :-( bs> Many thanks for all your suggestions. Well, it didn't seem to help much. :-) TTFN. Rick.
