MW->Specific background to my question: In a bookstore the other day, I MW->saw a copy of "ABC's of Paradox 4.0" for $6. The price is right, but I MW->wouldn't want to buy a book that would have little relevance to this MW->version. MW->My question: how different are Paradox 3.5 and 4.0? If they're MW->generally pretty close, I can be pretty sure the book's worth buying. MW->(Maybe someone who has used Paradox 3.5 and HAS "ABC's of..4.0" could MW->comment?) Difference: 80-85% the 'same' but it's not a 'linear' or fair comparison. You will learn, but you will be frustrated in some of missing improvements of the last DOS version 4.5. MW->My effort to save time and bandwidth from unwanted advice: I have no what advice would you like..? You can get any advice you want: caveat emptor! MW->money to upgrade to the current version of Paradox, WIN or DOS. I will MW->use this version or none at all. So please don't advise me to do so. MW->My gratitude: Thanks for your help! Well you've got something in hand, that you haven't tried, and are asking advice on how hard it is....? Obviously too hard since: MW->...I haven't tried it out yet, but intend to soon. So why consider a book before loading and trying if your money's too tight for a $100 upgrade, why waste $29.95 for a good book you may not even use? The Paradox manual has a reference guide AND examples. Use that as your tutorial on your loaded software before you buy a book. --- * SLMR 2.1 * Latest surveys show 47% of all statistics are worthless. --- QScan v1.141b / 01-0024 * Origin: (1:3407/14) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 119 PARADOX Ref: C3Q00000 Date: 03/19/95 From: RICH GORIN Time: 12:54am \/To: MIKE WEBB (Read 5 times) Subj: Buy The Book? They are significantly different: there's a lot of behind-the-scenes differences in memory and speed, but on the stuff that you will have to deal with, 4.0 handles memo fields, 3.5 does not; 4.0 has windowed workspaces, 3.5 is full-screen. The personal programmer was entirely rewritten for 4.0. If your finances are that tight, I'd wait and hunt for a book specific to 3.5. Meantime, the manuals that come with 3.5 are pretty good and will help you get started. --- * Origin: Recovery BBS, San Francisco, CA - 415-255-2188 (1:125/9) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 119 PARADOX Ref: C3Q00001 Date: 03/18/95 From: VIRGINIA HARLOW Time: 10:04am \/To: DAVID GRANGER (Read 5 times) Subj: About versions of par. Hello All! I just started picking up this conference so forgive me if this isn't on topic... I've just recently got a copy of Paradox for Windoze (ver 5.0 I think?) installed on my machine at the office. I really haven't had a chance to dig into either the manuals or the software yet, but I think I have a decent understanding of the normal capabilities to expect out of a relational database application such as paradox. Ok, now for my question... Given a database table something like this... Unique Identifier Test Date Production ----------------- ---------- ------------- Well_1 1/1/95 1000 Well_2 1/1/95 2000 Well_3 1/1/95 3000 Well_1 1/2/95 900 Well_2 1/2/95 1900 Well_3 1/2/95 2900 Well_1 1/3/95 800 Well_2 1/3/95 1800 Well_3 1/3/95 2800 and another table that has groups like so... Unique Identifier Belong_to_Group_A Belong_to_Group_B etc... ---------------- ----------------- ----------------- Well_1 Yes No Well_2 Yes Yes Well_3 Yes Yes Is there an easy way to create another table and/or report that would give me a daily history of the total production for wells belonging to Group_A? Example of output table/report would be Production for Group_A wells: Date Production --------- ----------- 1/1/95 6000 1/2/95 5700 1/3/95 5400 Flexibility to create new groups of unique identifiers and then get a report of their composite daily history of production is a key feature that I'm hoping for. I need to be able to easily add/delete wells from groups (and create new groups) without re-writing a bunch of SQL commands. Is this possible?
