Hi Chris, CG> I am puzzled, not at the shoots in the grapefruit - CG> presumably if heat conditions follow a suitable pattern, CG> the seed will germinate - but at the presence of green CG> shoots within the fruit. The seedlings have already begun germination, and are green from chlorophyll stored in the seed itself. As far as I can determine, citrus shoots are never colourless, thus having to green up. They really are a "Sunny" fruit. :-) CG>a week, although probably sitting on the store rack and perhaps CG>in an open truck for many days before that. That doesn't seem to matter. CG>Has anyone else ever discovered green shoots within a fruit? Sure. I have an ornamental (edible) miniature potted orange. Occasionally I will pluck and eat one of its tender-skinned but VERY sour fruits, and will sometimes crunch a seed. The seed is always green inside. Occasionally I plant an uncrunched seed, and the last one sprouted triplets - 3 shoots in 1. I separated them just to see what happens. :-) ...Sandra... --- * QMPro 1.52 * Want to own a small business? The fruit was sour, and considered inedible. There is one variety which is still sour. (Seville orange?) According to legend, a Scots merchant was sold a load of these, assuming they were sweet. But when they proved to be unsellable, and with his money spent on a perishable load of goods, he was desperate. His wife came up with the idea of slicing them thinly, and preserving them with loads of sugar, Orange Marmalade. And to some extent explains why it is a taste largely of the Commonwealth. ... I'd be glad to send you any mockingbirds I have since they > like to peck holes in my tomatoes. I think you must have > grackles maybe. Hi Marilyn, Mockingbirds do come to seed and suet feeders. I have a couple in my yard that frequent them every day. Especially now that I have a Woodpecker feeder with all kinds of goodies in it. In fact, I watched one yesterday that was trying to flutter long enough in the air to get some seed out of the hole of the feeder as there was none in the seed tray underneath and the feeder doesn't have any perches. --'-,-{@ Rita ... I hope the dwarf apple I planted 3 weeks ago does well. I got about 4 blossoms but don't think they will make it to apples this first year. But it will be fun to wait and see! It didn't seem to hurt the birds last year or the bluejay that ate the beetles just sprayed with the sevin, but I didn't use that much of it. This year I wanted to be more aggressive with the sprays so I would have less damage to the leaves, etc., but I quess moderation is always the best. I don't use any weed killers either, and my neighbors tell me I am working too hard trying to keep the weeds down by hand, but it works. I'll take anything that's green! (I especially remember problems with blue.) It's probably a good be to stay away from anything dark, even if they say it's fine. In your position, I would find out how long each company has been around, and determine EXACTLY what the warranty is on each one. I would do this for the contractor AND the siding manufacturer. ...Brad --- FleetStreet 1.22 NR * Origin: Building Supply BBS 250-746-1038 (1:340/201) DD>Now to make use of those ole tin cans left from eating soup.
