By the way, where can I find diatomecious earth? TB>I'm on a low cholesterol diet so I don't have that many eggs to crush TB>either. I have lots of eggshells, and I'm on a very low-fat diet for high cholesterol. (I simply throw the yolks away, except for the 2 a week that I permit myself. 2 whites = 1 whole egg in a lot of baked goods as well. Back to the problem at hand - diatomecious earth can be found at many pool stores, but it's in a different mill grade than the insecticidal one, which is found in plant stores, especially those carrying "organic" items. Whichever you use, be considerate of your lungs and don't breathe the dust. If you can buy, find or beg some sharp coarse sand in any quantity, it should work just as well. Just place in bands around the hostas' stems, say, 2-3 inches wide. And make sure no slugs can slither onto the hostas from touching plants. Either cut the touchers back, or boobytrap them as well. :-) ...Sandra... --- * QMPro 1.52 * A STOIC brings the baby; a CYNIC is where you wash it. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: The Fire Pit BBS Paris Ont (519)442-1013 (1:221/1518.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 208 HOME & GARDEN Ref: F4B00003 Date: 04/05/98 From: JOSEPH RAMPOLLA Time: 05:43pm \/To: MARILYN BOISSONEAULT (Read 2 times) Subj: Re: Dwarf Blue Spruce MB> It sure is hard work, but when you start seeing the soil MB> improve and start finding earthworms where none would live before MB> it's a good feeling! Hi Marilyn, Thanks for the reply! I do have earthworms, but a lot of that shale rock that makes digging impossible without a pickax or digging/pry bar. Just planted a true dwarf stayman winesap apple tree, about 4 ft tall now. My neighbor tells me that I will have a forest instead of a yard soon. Always wanted a forest! It is almost two years old now (for me). The first winter it did alright until March when a brief below freezing spell with strong winds knocked off most of the leaves. It recovered nicely last Summer. This winter wasn't bad at all, but again the leaves this past March, too, took a beating. Anyway, I use the "Miracid" as directed, but the leaves never get that deep green color like they should. I think I will have some blossoms soon. Any suggestions will be most appreciated. I am no Barbra, a weed can be any plant not wanted in a area you are tending. I planted some Johnny-Jump-ups and they quickly turned out to be a weed in the area I was hoping to be a prennial garden. Johnny-Jump-Ups have a small purple two tone flower and the seeds from that plant multiply like crazy. Took several years to get rid of that weed. Morning Glories are weeds around this neck of the woods, but other folks plant them for their profusly blooming ability. Bermuda grass is a weed if you are trying to grow fescue grass. I think crab grass is a weed to everyone unless you are a person that knows no difference between Fescue, bermuda, or dandalions, and wild onions that gives you something to mow . Simply put a weed is a plant you do not wish to see growing where it is presently flourisning. =Don- --- TriToss (tm) 1.03 - #28 * Origin: PC GARDEN BBS * Gibsonville NC (City of Roses) 336-449-7857 (1:3654/18) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 208 HOME & GARDEN Ref: F4B00006 Date: 04/04/98 From: THURSTON ACKERMAN Time: 10:55pm \/To: BOB LOTSPEICH (Read 2 times) Subj: Ants BL>BLACK or RED ANTS: BL>1. I get lots of blackbirds, but they're never in my feeder. They go for the bread I throw out. Maybe you should get some mockingbirds tho. I get a kick out of watching them drive off the blackbirds. The mockingbirds never go for the seed, they just don't want the blackbirds around. It looks like Snoopy and the Red Baron, seeing them "fight" in the air. It really isn't a fight, since the mockingbirds are on the attack and the blackbirds are running away. The mockingbirds don't bother the cardinals or doves. They just hate the blackbirds. BTW: There was an article in the paper a couple weeks ago, saying that a birdfeeder should be occasionally washed out with hot soapy water and chlorine. It said that birds have been dying from salmonella poisoning from contaminated bird feeders. Jimvee ...
