Yes, our climat is ideal for those spring bulb flowers. JV> They must be starting to come up about now. The best way I've found to catch mice is to use regular spring traps placed by the baseboard. Mice have better vision than rats, but they are more timid. They will run along the periphery of a room instead of directly across it if given a chance. For bait, use peanut butter and plain oatmeal. Mice are grain eaters. I don't know what person decided to use cheese, but it doesn't work. To prepare the bait, place a dime-sized dab of peanut butter on a piece of wax paper. Pour some plain oatmeal over it, and work the oatmeal into the peanut butter until it isn't sticky. Place the ball of bait on the trap. If there's a mouse in the house, you'll soon be throwing his carcass away! The bait is not poisonous at all so don't worry about the cat. Using this method, I caught 11 mice in one night! With mice, you can reuse the trap over and over, even if it has had blood on it. This is not true for rats. Rats have a keener sense of smell than of vision. You can use a trap only once. The best way to get rid of a rat is to use sticky strips placed along the baseboard where he can run across it. You can also place some oatmeal on one end as bait if needed. Above all, don't go out and buy high dollar/high tech gadgets. It's a waste of time and money. I hope this helps you out. Regards, Stu email: drumstik@flash.net ... TB>Thanks Terry Hostas like shade and moistness - a slug's idea of paradise. The quickest cure is handpicking them, but there are squeamish folks out there. (You're not squeamish, are you, Terry?) The next best is employing a couple of ducks, but in a suburban setting, with a zillion duck-eaters (dogs) in the neighbourhood, and the necessity for good fences, most people can't do that one. (Not to mention that if you get any other ducks except Muscovys, you'll break anti-noise regulations. :-)) So that leaves mainly sand, diatomecious earth, crushed eggshells, and other gritty stuff to spread around the hostas. This is the equivalent of a slug mine field, and it takes a brave slug to risk it. But in REAL slug areas, ducks are by far your best bet. :-) ...Sandra... --- * QMPro 1.52 * I'm not a complete idiot; some parts are missing. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: The Fire Pit BBS Paris Ont (519)442-1013 (1:221/1518.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 208 HOME & GARDEN Ref: F4200018 Date: 03/29/98 From: SANDRA PEAKE Time: 02:00pm \/To: MARIA VAN RYMERSDAEL (Read 2 times) Subj: Stevia Aloha, Maria, MVR>SP> enough that cuttings root without effort. So when, this weekend, I plant my peas in my 15-litre ice- CG>cream tubs, they have a good chance of doing well, as the soil is CG>more likley to be at the air temperature than the ground CG>temperature? If you're talking inground 60-70 feet above ground level on a balcony, the soil may be warmer, but winds are apt to cause intense evaporation and cool everything down. One way I cool melons on a hot sunny day w/o access to a fridge is to cover them with a light cloth, pour water over, and/or leave one end in a pan of water, in shade where there's a breeze. You have to have that breeze. :-) Same principle. CG>FWIW I noticed that in yesterday's balmy 20C temperature, the CG>floor of the underground parking was WET. I figure that the warm CG>moist air hits the floor, which is still close to freezing, and CG>the moisture condenses out. Yuppers. Not that it has to be close to freezing, but that the air has to be close to the dew point; when it reaches saturation, it starts condensing out on cooler surfaces. ...Sandra... --- * QMPro 1.52 * Keyboard not found ...
