Those fire ants are are a more resistant than reg ants. The diazinon will kill a bunch but never seems to wipe the colony out. I hope you luck out and never do get a glimpse of those darn things. And they didn't get the name "fire" for nothing. Those things hurt. I'm from Ontario and I know that people with cottages often use electronic devices. They emit a very high pitched sound that the mice cannot stand. They probably work as many people seem to use them. Don't forget to tell him to set the beer just outside the garden to draw the slugs out from the garden. Setting the beer *inside* the garden will attract more slugs *into* the garden.
