I have heard from some some poeple EP> that grafting is the "only" way to grow roses. Here in EP> Hawaii we don't really have that many people that grow EP> roses. Eric, I don't mean to butt in here, but *nothing* but aquatic plants grow a "strong" root system in water! A water grown root system is very basic, and has to grow the *rest* of the root system once it is planted in soil. This is why so many cuttings started in water don't do very well for the first few weeks, once they are moved to soil. The root system of a plant delivers moisture and nutrients from the soil via its' secondary root system, to the primary root system (which is what developes somewhat in water), which, in turn takes it on up into the plant, itself. With *only* the large roots developed, the plant can't take up, from the soil, the things that it got quite readily, from the water environment. Once it has had time to develope that secondary root system it is able to get the growing process under way, but until then, it is slow-growing, ... uh, going :) I would strongly suggest that you go ahead and take afew rose cuttings, dip them in rooting hormone, if you think they need it, and strike them in half sand/half peatmoss, water in, and tent with plastic... allowing about a month (or more), and watch for signs of new growth. I usually do this rooting step in a protected place, moving my rooted cuttings out into more sun, as they develope (roses appreciate 6-8 hours of sun/day, tho they appreciate being protected from the highest heat of the day, with morning sun being the best sun for them. They really don't deserve the "finickie" title they've been given. They are just exacting. I hope you are delighed with your rose experience... who knows, you might just start a whole new "thing" in that beautiful land- scape! I am one who usually jumps the gun on planting my garden. My neighbor beat me out this year. He put peas in 2 weeks ago and last week his Spinich was up and looked delicious. I am afraid that he will lose it all come this weekend when we are to have temps back in the teens. Just like real winter here in SE WI.
