Need to know what would be a good repellant. Hi, well chances are good that your problem is slugs. The best way to find out is to go out after dark with a flashlight and look. They hide during the day and come out after dark to feed. About an hour after dark is a good time. They should be up on the leaves then and you can see what's eating your hosta. They will climb up taller plants too. I've found them way up on my tomatoes. Actually the best way to get rid of them is to handpick them. I just drop them into a container with soapy water and they don't climb out of that, they die. After a few nights you will have pretty well controlled your slug problem. If you don't relish the idea of handpicking them I've heard that beer traps work well too. Snails and slugs seem to be worse during rainy weather. Marilyn ... Hi Maria, ME>A little misunderstanding from my part. Close to which bigger city is ME>Georgian Bay? I couldn't find the Bay on my map. So you are lucky to live Not very close to any big city, but several within a few hours drive. Look for Sudbury in the Province of Ontario. It is on the northeastern side of Georgian Bay. We've already had a couple of snowfalls, and the steps were icy this morning. Any tender plants left outside are now memories. :-) ME>That's rather arly. Mostly we get only a first frost in the first week of ME>November or later. Hope it won't become a very cold winther. I have seen this pattern before. We had an early very cold autumn a few years back, followed by a mild winter. (Followed by a wet cold spring, etc.). But mild is a word of many colours. Our heating bills went UP because wind accompanied the mild, and wind gobbles up heat. ...Sandra... --- * QMPro 1.52 * Gravity isn't easy, but it's the law. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: The Fire Pit BBS Paris Ont (519)442-1013 (1:221/1500.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 208 HOME & GARDEN Ref: EFC00000 Date: 11/06/97 From: AUGUST ABOLINS Time: 06:29pm \/To: SUE MICHAUD (Read 1 times) Subj: earwigs Hi Sue! We had a major dump of the white stuff last week (about 35 centimeters!), but it all melted away during the following week. Anyhow.. regarding the earwigs: we had a neighbour that was constantly invaded by those darn things in the fall. One particularly infested area was near a patio door. The earwigs would scatter and manage to get in the house everytime she used the door. But for her, the soapy spray solution got rid of them quickly and safely (she has lots of cats so she was concerned about using chemicals). Here in Belgium we put them in the ground in October or at latest in November before it's starting to freeze to let grow them up in Spring (April/May) when it becomes warmer again. As I suppose that you're living in the state Louisiana, where the weather is rather mild, (15/20C = 60/70F) during the next months, I think that you can put them now into the ground, certainly as they have already had a cold period in your refrigerator. I'm curious to read what others from the same climatarea's advise you to do!
