On 16 October 1997 Marilyn Boissoneault wrote to Maria Edelhausen: MB> I grow cabbage here in the winter. I have some small ones ready MB> to plant right now. I can plant them up through January. It's Whow and I just had to cover the green cabbage a bit for the coming nights because we'll get real hard frost till 14F (-10C). The curled cabbage must have had some nights of frost to taste really well. So next week I can make a good dinner with curled cabbage. Our greenhouse is now filled with containerplants for the winterseason and the garden is nearly empty, only the cabbages and leak are still staying there. Enjoy your wintergardening. Does anyone know? Here in New England we would get them in the ground about now (before the ground freezes 8-). If I was down your way I would check with the local horticultural society for a better date. We generally plant them 12" deep, in triangler groups; with some chicken wire a few inchs below the surface to make it difficult for squirrls digging them up if that is a problem in your area. BTW Might you be related to Doctor Don Hamm, Chief Radiologist, Franklin Co. We were driving along the road with the Eucalyptus trees on either side and you could really smell them! It was neat! :-) I didn't realise just how aromatic the trees were. I'll just dub it "p-plant", okay? I have a p-plant which is the size of a hedge and it's in a 12 gallon pot (I think that's the size). I'd like to re-pot it in a half-barrel-size container, but can I do this anytime of the year? Or just at certain times? Also, does anyone know if it will make a new plant if I just broke off a stem and stuck it in the ground? I successfully did this with my hydrangea plant a few years ago and I do this all the time with mums, but I just don't want to go breaking off stems of this p-plant not knowing if it will work or not.
