AA> Do young willows need special preparation for winter? I'd think not. They are quite sturdy. However, I'd look around my area and see how prolific they are there. If they are "down by the riverside", so to speak... and all along the fence-rows, etc. I'd say it is a safe bet to just give them some protection against being accidentaly broken, due to their size (if they are small). If they aren't everywhere (like they are where I am :) then I'd say to maybe give them the same protection you give all of your other young, tender starts. They are, after all, native to North America, so chances are better than not that you will have no problem. I would, as I said, give them the protection that I would give any smaller start. cheers, WL Sakowski........ at the end of the trail..... in Okieland, America!! --- * Origin: gn3.gratisnet.com (1:170/302.10) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 208 HOME & GARDEN Ref: EEZ00001 Date: 10/29/97 From: MARILYN BOISSONEAULT Time: 04:42pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: cypress mulch??? Marilyn, if I had cypress mulch you'd better bet I'd already have it on there, and be looking for more. I'm sure there are those who don't like it, but I *do*! I've even had people tell me that pine bark "encourages termites". I must tell you that I've used pine, cypress, pine straw, hay, (and when I am desperate, I have even used newspaper and card-board boxes [not praticularly a recommendation, tho] :) and I've never experienced termites. The only reason I can think of is that you probably live in an acid soil region, and this will further acidify the soil. For some plants, this may not be advantageous, especially where many herbs are concerned. However, this is not a difficult thing to correct for... In fact, if you are introducing acid lovers into your landscape, up by your house, and it is either sitting (this would be your house :) on concrete (slab) or is brick, or has any amount of concrete to deal with, and you *don't* use some kind of acid (source) mulch, you are missing one of the great opportunities to encourage them to survive! Like I said, if I *had* it, I'd use it! cheers, WL Sakowski........ at the end of the trail..... in Okieland, America!! --- * Origin: gn3.gratisnet.com (1:170/302.10) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 208 HOME & GARDEN Ref: EF300002 Date: 10/30/97 From: WL-SKI Time: 11:39pm \/To: LEEANN HAMM (Read 1 times) Subj: tulip bulbs LH> ... tulip bulbs in the refrigerator, ... not sure when to put them in the ground. They are what Mother Teresa's rosary was made of. Anyway, I planted some and two have germinated. I'll have to bring it in if it freezes--have them in a pot right now. If anyone has grown these, how long does it take before they start making seeds? I think the plant resembles a very short corn plant . . . I haven't seen one before. Got these seeds from a lady at church. Lee Ann Hamm / E-mail Addy: lee.ann.hamm@clickers.org http://www.premier.net/~lhamm --- SLMR 2.1a "Stop him! Predacons...terrorize!" Close to which bigger city is Georgian Bay? I couldn't find the Bay on my map. So you are lucky to live so close to the water, which gives you a mild climat. With which part of the USA can your climat be compaired? Do you think it is as mild as the 'Mditrane climat' in the south of Europe? Did you already have frost over there? We already had some in last week during the nights and from this night again it will be freezing, by mid of the week till -10C = 14F. So I had to hurry up to put all my subtropical containerplants into the greenhouse. That's rather arly. Mostly we get only a first frost in the first week of November or later. Hope it won't become a very cold winther. Greetings Maria --- FMail/386 1.0g * Origin: INTRO/BBS-Lanaken/Belgium- 24h on line +32 89732917 (2:292/127.17)
