On the other hand, with IBM wanting $190 per glitch one MIGHT be tempted to spend a little time to get these things to work. I did quit fooling around with WFDOS, or whatever it was. I am running Caldera's open DOS, that I beleive you put me on to. Open DOS has networking built in but it is Netware, not Lan Server based. I loaded it without the Networking because they have a 286 MEMORY MANAGER built into the thing that is a killer. I have never gotten as much memory from a 286 as I have from this DOS. I then proceeded to run Lantastic as a workstation with the modifications to work with a SMB network. So far I have been able to log on and now I am trying to get set up to use the shared resources on the OS2 machine. This is all quite a mess but if I get it working I will have an OS2 machine, 3 WFW machines and 2 286 Lantastic workstations all together no the Network. THIS IS NOT FOR THE EASILY FRUSTRATED! I, and others doing this type of thing, are basically on our own. Thanks for the word. I have heard from several people that are successfully using WFDOS, I just don't know how. --- Maximus/2 2.02 * Origin: OS/2 Shareware BBS, telnet://bbs.os2bbs.com (1:109/347) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 207 OS2 LAN Ref: EG300008 Date: 12/03/97 From: LYNN NASH Time: 02:12pm \/To: KEN PIMONTEL (Read 1 times) Subj: 3com with bios RW>*** Quoting Ken Pimontel to Andrew Leary dated 11-27-97 *** > So, if my understanding is correct, this feature adds no extra > functionality to a system running OS/2, W95, WNT, etc. > > Maybe it would be possible to boot DOS from an OS/2 system, emulating > NetWare? It comes in the box with both versions of Warp Server, and there are upgrades available for downloading on IBM's web site. I have Warp Server Advanced runing here and like it very much. Twice as fast as NT 4.0 on the same hardware, very stable and *MUCH* more capability right outa the box. Haven't installed or tested Lan Distance yet, so no comment on how good it is. However, if it's like the rest of the product, it will be highly capable (but a bear to figure out how to set up the first time). You can setup PPP dial-in access and access the work machine with ftp, telnet and even http if you want to setup an HTTP server. There are 2 dial-in servers available I know of, AdialIn and TServe. These get the login and pass off to PPP.EXE. These are probably the easiest way to go. I have Binkleyterm answer and pass off to PPP and PPP does pap autentication. You won't 'see' the lan at work in "File and Print Client Resource Browser", it'll be like an Internet site. Not exactly what you wanted but a hell of a lot cheaper than Warp Server. After installing Fixpak #31 and adding the line RESERVEDRIVELETTER=O, I am no longer offered the option of sharing the drives of my NEC 4x4 CD-ROM. If I leave out the RESERVEDRIVELETTER line in CONFIG.SYS, I am then offered the option of sharing the assigned drive letters. Since these 2 machines are for my BBS system, and I want to keep the drive lettering the same for the drives ( hence the RESERVEDRIVELETTER setting ), I need to be able to share the drives. Any help appreciated since I can't seem to find why I am not offered the option of sharing the drives when I set up the lettering. I can write fine but reading is inpossible. At least I have not been able to make it work and both me and a friend of mine have bent our picks on it.
