I haven't paid much attention to handheld stuff since the Apple Newton came out some years back. My impression of the Newton was "why do I want to pay the price of a full size desktop PC for something that doesn't do anything I can't do with a .99 cent spiral bound mini-notebook?" I have seen some handheld devices for inventory and data-acquisition that are pretty slick; but they weren't cheap.......on heck of a bargain compared to the labor costs they saved though..... I suspect general purpose PDA's will go the way of the dinosaur as their functionality gets built into other items (automobile, cell phone, wristwatch, etc.....) --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: McAllen Memorial Library FidoNet (1:397/5258) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 206 WINDOWS 32BIT Ref: F3T00001 Date: 03/23/98 From: ALAN ZISMAN Time: 06:34am \/To: MURRAY SMITH (Read 2 times) Subj: Windows CE Murray Smith said to John Donohue on 03-20-98 16:06: MS>John Donohue wrote in a message to All: JD> So, now that it's been declared more or less on topic, what IS JD> Windows CE? ;-) MS>Windows for Palmtop computers... ie: orginizers where you MS>really don't need windows.. :) - i think CE means cheap MS>edition.. i don't belive you can actually _DO_ Much with it. Depends what you want to do with it... I'm fairly impressed with the new generation (CE 2.0) colour machines, such as HP620LX... the screens offer high-contrast 256 colour, which is finally readable for long periods of time (my biggest problem w. the original monochrome models), and with 16 megs RAM, there's plenty of memory for CE applications and data. As a result, they can be a notebook replacement for many people looking for a lighter machine for light use-- minimal writing and calculating, some web browsing and e-mail. No, they're not a replacement for a 'full' computer for most users, but they potentially have some value beyond replacing a paper DayTimer. _______________ Internet mail to: azisman@rogers.wave.ca Win95 FAQ at: http://home.bc.rogers.wave.ca/azisman/faq95.htm ___ * WR 1.31 # 126 * --- Maximus 2.01wb * Origin: Basic'ly Computers: Mooo-ing Right Along.
