The installation completed without any problem but when 95b starts up, 1/2 of the control panel pallet wouldn't fire up and whenever I go to properties of something, explorer crash and the details didn't tell what module is crashing most of the time. There are other strange crashing problems too. I did a clean install on a 100 meg hd and the same probelms are still there so I assume the cause is not the upgrade process. Is there any know probelm with osr2 running on a cyrix dx100. My system config as follows: cyrix dx100 16 meg edo s3 virge sb pro II 1x external cd 24x panasonic cr-585 plus a motherboard with fake cache on it :( At the moment, I did a restore of the win 95 drive, boot up using the 95A boot disk, did a sys c: and everything seems to be back to normal. In control panel, windows still thinks it is 95 b and when I press F8 during boot up, I don't get the "run previous MS dos" option. Any ideas welcome. ... There is a reason why nt programs keep TM> holding on to hardware (like a comport) without letting TM> other applications access it, and that's stability? I've never had a problems with any comm program, DOS or 32 bit in NT other than 16 bit FOSSILs were quite piggish in NT, but not to say it couldn't happen. Most every common DOS (Telix, Binkley, Procomm, etc etc) and Windows comm program (Telix, Procomm, Winfax, QL2FAX, Superfax, Bit com, bit com voice software etc etc) I've ever used in NT just hunkey dory. NT has -excellent- communications services and there is no reason what-so-ever for a programmer to think he has to do something as stupid as directly addressing the comport to get better efficiency, because all he is going to do is screw things up. As far as handling all the goofy things programmers can dream up when they are writing comport I/O, I think NT does it quite well. All a person setting up NT has to realize is that NT presents a 16450 "emulator" to the DOS software that has nothing to do with the physical comport hardware settings. They are the old "default" DOS comport settings of COM1-IRQ4, COM2-IRQ3,COM3-IRQ4,COM4-IRQ3. All you have to do is setup your DOS comport configuration to use those default IRQ's and you will find that unless the DOS progammer has done something -really- boneheaded, his DOS Comm program will work fine in NT. It's when you try to configure DOS software to use non-standard Comport address and IRQ's to match what is physically present that DOS software gets all screwed up in NT as NT will not allow DOS communications software direct hardware access to the port. It's quite necessary to use the default address's and IRQ settings that NT presents to the DOS comm app to get it working correctly and usually quite well in NT. --- Maximus/NT 3.01b1 * Origin: Cowboy Country USA! An NT system partition is where the system files reside. System files are NTDETECT.COM and NTLDR. A boot partition contains NTKRNL and the remaining NT files. The floppy becomes the system partition, the hard drive the boot partition. My opinion is NT boots from the floppy. If you have a corrupted system partition, but a valid boot partition, the floppy can be used to boot NT. I agree, it's not possible to boot NT from just the floppy.
