I renamed win.com to win.!!! and rebooted into DOS. Changed to the cdrom (containing OSR2-WIN95b) and typed in setup. It wanted to install into \WINDOWS.001, I told it to install into \WINDOWS. When it was finished, I used Partition magic to convert the drives from FAT16 -> FAT32. All finished in less than an hour. It's running like a charm. -=<>Stupidity is not a recognized Handicap, Please park elsewhere<>=- --- timEd-B11 * Origin: THE BULLPEN, -=<>bob@adcn.on.ca<>=- (1:163/333) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 206 WINDOWS 32BIT Ref: F1K00001 Date: 01/14/98 From: VANN NORRED Time: 08:09am \/To: MARY MARTIN (Read 2 times) Subj: Patterson referral What was the Patterson agent's name that you referred to me? BD> 3: Is it possible to restore ANY of the WIN95a from tape backup over BD> top of the new WIN95b installation? GP> It is not advisable to restore any of Win95a files over the top of Win95b. Depends on how badly the guy want's his old desktop and how much software he would have to re-install and the time it would take if he didn't restore it from tape overwriting everything and then re-installing W95b. If he has a lot of programs and data, it would probably be less time consuming to restore from the tape and just re-install 1 program (Windows 95b). Tapes are slow, but they also run unattended. You can do this, and I've done it.It was to move the information and software from the old computer to a new computer and had about 2 gig of software (15-20 windows apps) and data. Backed up his old Windows 95a drive, on the new Win95b restored it, over writing all. On your next boot, obviously W95b won't run, however, you can boot off a floppy loading the CD-ROM drivers, deleting WIN.COM and then re-install Windows 95b. Be sure to setup the C: drive up to load the CD-ROM drivers in the CONFIG.SYS and then link those drivers with MSCDEX.EXE in the C: autoexec.bat as the first time W95b reboots, it needs the 16 bit CD-ROM drivers and MSCDEX loaded to copy more files off the CD-ROM. It will work fine. No doubt a pain in the butt, but depending on the situation, it could very well be a better way to get all a persons data, software and destop mi-grated from the old Windows 95a system to the new Windows 95b. Just depends on how big the old drive is and how many programs would have to be re-installed as to whether a person would restore the whole shebang from tape and then just re-install windows 95b or to restore every directory excepte Windows, and then re-install what ever software and recreate the desktop. I prefer doing it by using using a 2nd WIN95 system and master/slaving the old/new drive on the secondary IDE Channel, fdisking and formatting the new drive with FAT 32 and then using Explorer or XCOPY32 to mirror the old drive to the new drive and then installing 95b but you can use a tape, overwriting all, and then re-install Windows 95b again if you have to. It works but can be a bit more time consuming as tapes are quite a bit slower and if you restore from a tape, it entails installing W95b twice to the new hard FAT 32 drive as you have to restore the tape from Windows 95 or you won't get the long file names restored correctly. (There is no LFNBK for FAT32). --- Maximus/NT 3.01b1 * Origin: Cowboy Country USA! Looks like I'll need to MM>install W98 beta at some point too. :-) The selective boots means nothing relative to how you partition. The partitioning helps keep OS clutter/damage more-or-less on that one drive. ou could use many different OSes on one partition (assuming there was one compatible file system that they all work with) with no problems. MM>I've got a copy of Partition Magic v3.xx that I haven't MM>installed yet. It comes w/ two boot managers do you MM>prefer one over the other? It depends on what you need. The simplicity of NT's boot manager makes it an easy choice but it doesn't cover all eventualities. IBM's boot manager comes with PM which has the advantage of making the other bootable partitions "invisible" to the OS currently running so they can't muck with files, etc. It's a slick way to make the system appear to have only one OS (at a time). Of course, you'd probably want a separate partition for shared applications and/or data... --- *Durango b200 #NR* DurangoMail for Windows NT/95 --- QScan/PCB v1.17b / 01-0406 * Origin: Knight Moves - Rochester,NY 716-865-2106 (1:2613/313) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 206 WINDOWS 32BIT Ref: F1K00006 Date: 01/15/98 From: MIKE MAGUIRE Time: 12:38pm \/To: TORBJORN MOHN (Read 2 times) Subj: Dual Boot w/ Win95 TM> TM>There is a boot manager with NT.
