It happens when there are variations in MTU size along the path. By default NT is designed not to fragment IP packets and it must be told to do so. The most common flaw is that somewhere along the route from the host to the destination a larger MTU size is in use. NT servers can't fragment the packets unless a registry change is implemented at the host. You can test this theory yourself by using ping and adjusting the packet size downward from the default. At some point you'll be unable to ping even local routers. Fixes to this issue are posted in URL's at Microsofts site and you'll find them by searching for "black hole router". Sometimes the problem needs to be fixed at the host and the webmaster at each site needs to know the problem exists. Hope that helps. The LAN is a 10 MBit Coax system. The network adapters are Longshine ISA NE2000 compatibles without Plug&Play. The problem is that a Win95 machine in the network seems to slow down from time to time in the network (about each 3 minutes). When I unplug the Win95 system from the network, everything goes fine. When I reconnect it, it slows down again. I suspect NT is sending some kind of data to that system without me knowing it. This is very annoying and I wondered whether anybody else was knowing what this was really caused by... Sometimes the problem needs to be fixed at the host and the DS> webmaster at each site needs to know the problem exists. Well, I found the info on the MS site (EnablePMTUBHDetect set to 1), but I still have the same problems....:( It sounds EXACTLY like what is happening, but there must be some other problem somewhere. When I do a ping to some of these sites (www.weather.com is one that hasn't work since I upgraded to NT), sometimes I get "destination net unreachable". This sounds like a routing problem to me, but for the life of me, I don't now what the problem could be. My route tables are VERY simple. The only route that I have added manually is the one to enable RAS to route packets, because I have wcPPP installed. I don't believe this is the problem, since my other NT machine is the same way, and it doesn't have wcPPP installed on it. Any more suggestions? Thanks much! Rob ...
