My goal is to have a small practice facility for learning NT. Here's my gameplan, so far: Machine "A" : 486DX4/120 w/32m, #9 Motion 330, Adaptec 1542, Pioneer DRM-602x CD Changer: NT Server 4.0. This is simply a BBS computer (WildCat!), used for nothing more than running one DOS box and internet surfing - and yes, I know that things might drag a bit with the 486 CPU. But you see, it's located in a remote part of the house, where I can sit and sob loudly 'till the wee hours of the morning as I learn NT ... :-) Machine "B" : K6/200 w/64m, Diamond 3000 w/4m, SB16 PnP: NT Workstation 4.0. This is the family PC. Applications most run: Office97, Pagemaker 6, Photoshop 4, CorelDraw! 7. Games most run: Quake, Need For Speed II, Jane's ATF, Monopoly, SimCity 2k. 1> Will the software I'm using run under NT on both boxes? Will Office97 for Win95 run on an NT box? I'm also concerned about running the Win95 games on "B". Fortunately, we don't play DOS games - except for Quake, and maybe Duke, soon. :-) 2> Any hardware issues I should be aware of, especially on "B"? Like with the SB16 or my Thrustmaster products (Driving Controller, F-16 Joystick & F-16 TQS? Or should I be configuring "B" for dual-boot into 95/NT ? 3> Should I plan for NTFS right off the bat, or wait a while and convert later using Partition Magic? I know if I make "B" dual-boot that NTFS is right out. 4> What service packs & patches do I need to chase down for both products? 5> Once I get everything running, what's a good study path to head down on the way to professional certification? What certification titles am I looking for? MSCE? MSCP? Thanks in advance for ya'lls help! However, there was a procedure for setting up a dual boot scenario between OEMSR2/NT that was published by Brian Livingston. Unfortunately, I didn't make a copy of it. Maybe one of our regular posters like Chris or Dale can shed some light.. I've got OEMSR2 loaded on my daughter's machine only since that particular machine (in my home) is not setup to dual boot NT and Win95. At the office where I work, all our new machines that were purchased from Dell have OEMSR2 already installed but without FAT-32 support. I suppose that was done for compatibility purposes, but it's certainly a waste since our hard drives are 2 - 3 gigs and larger. If you are using a FOSSIL, it might be touching an IRQ for another com port and that one might be conflicting with your sound card. If Microsoft isn't making them put it on the machine, then it won't be on the machine. If Microsoft says 'Win95 only' then there can be no doubt about what will happen. The manufacturers and vendors don't have diddly squat to say about it. "They" are not dropping support. Microsoft is dropping its support. For all it matters, the local Staples sells Windows For Work Groups at $99 a pop, and has a dozen copies on the shelf. ______________________________________________________________________ from the Great State O' Maine, USA /*/ lmckimmy@wa2000.winarea.gwi.net ...
